Russell owns up to Singapore setbacks: ‘A very bad day all in all’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

George Russell has nobody to blame but himself for a Saturday that unravelled spectacularly at Marina Bay, with a costly Sprint crash followed by a subdued qualifying performance under the sfloodlights.

On Friday, the Mercedes driver had looked in excellent shape in Sprint qualifying, securing a front-row start alongside Max Verstappen.

When the lights went out in Saturday’s rain-delayed event, Russell made the most of a superior getaway to seize the lead from the Red Bull driver.

But the promising start gave way to a disastrous finish to his opening lap. Running slightly wide at the exit of the final corner, Russell lost control of his Silver Arrow and spun into the inside wall, bringing his Sprint to an abrupt end.

It was an expensive mistake, not only in terms of the points opportunity lost but also the damage inflicted on his car ahead of the afternoon’s qualifying session. Russell subsequently managed only sixth, a result that left him searching for answers as Mercedes struggled to reproduce its earlier competitiveness.

“Obviously a very bad day all in all, and stemming from my own mistake,” he admitted.

Crash damage leaves Mercedes chasing answers

Russell believes the hurried rebuild following his Sprint accident may have contributed to his difficulties in qualifying, although he stopped short of presenting it as a definitive explanation.

“The car didn't feel quite the same. I was struggling with the rear end and then I was overheating the tyres and it was just a bit of a downward spiral, whereas yesterday it all just clicked and it was all working well, so we need to see why that was.

“[This] is not, sometimes, a surprise when the whole team is putting it back together so quickly and it's obviously been in the wall. Yesterday we were competitive every lap we did, and today it was not the case.”

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged that the circumstances surrounding the rebuild may have compromised the car, while stressing that the team still needed to investigate.

“With George, the car was only finished at the very last minute,” Wolff told Sky Germany. “The floor is probably not quite as it should be. So all in all, it was a good performance.”

The suggestion that the floor may not have been restored to its proper condition offers a possible explanation for Russell’s loss of confidence in the rear of the car.

But regardless of the mechanical implications, the original damage was caused by the driver’s own error, something Russell readily accepted.

A difficult recovery mission awaits

Russell’s predicament is compounded by the power unit penalty carried over from his engine failure at Sepang, which will relegate him to the back of the grid for Sunday’s race.

That leaves the Briton facing the challenge of making progress through a field where overtaking is notoriously difficult, particularly with Red Bull and Ferrari appearing highly competitive around the tight Marina Bay circuit.

The contrasting fortunes of teammate Kimi Antonelli offer little certainty about what might be possible. The Italian won from 19th on the grid at Monza, but struggled to make comparable progress from 16th in Baku, illustrating how heavily recovery drives depend on circumstances.

Russell is under no illusions about the task ahead, and his expectations remain deliberately modest.

“It's going to be very challenging,” he added.

“Kimi obviously had one race starting in 19th and won, and another race in 16th and was only up to P10 with 10 laps remaining or whatever. Same driver, same car, but very different outcomes. So to answer your question, I really don't know.”

For Russell, Sunday is now about salvaging points from a weekend that began with genuine promise. His candour over Saturday’s mistakes is commendable, but accountability alone will not repair the damage — either to his car or to his Singapore prospects.
