As stated above, the University of Virginia will officially be the first team in the championship match on November 6th, and Ohio State and Michigan have both been eliminated as it is mathematically impossible for them to finish in the top-seven teams.
The next two matches will be crucial when determining which teams will make it to the wild card match, and which teams will earn an auto-berth to the final.
As a reminder, the top three teams will automatically move on, while the teams ranked 4th-7th will meet again in a “wild card” match just one day before the Championship, on November 5th.
Match 5 Lineup
#3 Indiana, #4 Stanford, #6 NC State, #7 CalThis match will be one of the most crucial of the season, and one of these teams could be out of the wild card match. The winner of the match will secure their spot in the final, since a tie would go to the team that won in the head-to-head matchup.
There is a chance that three of the four teams racing here will meet again in the wild card round, depending on how the next two matches go. If Stanford or Indiana finishes 4th, all four teams will move on with the bottom three racing in the wild card round. If Cal or NC State finishes 4th, they will be relying on certain finishes in the final match.
Match 6 Lineup
#8 Tennessee, #10 Auburn, #11 Alabama, #12 GeorgiaTennessee will likely move onto the final after they picked up three points, nearly beating the University of Virginia in their first match and will be heavy favorites going into the final match of the season.
Georgia is almost certainly out of contention, unless they can come out on top of the rankings in the final match, and the rest of the matches go their way.
Auburn and Alabama are the major wild cards. If one of them finishes 1st or 2nd, they will lock up a spot in the wild card round. In the event of a 3rd place finish, they could be tied with NC State or Cal — if one of them finishes 4th — for the final spot in the wild card match.
NC State holds a tie break over Alabama and Cal holds a tie-break over Auburn. If the opposite happens, e.g. NC State and Auburn finish 4th, the tie-break will come down to total points scored over both matches.
Following the 5th match, SwimSwam will figure out exactly what it would take for each team in the final match to make the wild card round.
