Michele Lamberti started his Italian Championships with a bang as he set a new Italian record in the 50 back, shaving 0.02 seconds from the 24.40 he swam at the 2024 Sette Colli to clock 24.38 tonight. That previous swim had matched the 24.40 that Thomas Ceccon swam for silver at the 2022 European Championships.

Lamberti burst onto the scene at the 2021 European Short Course Championships, claiming five medals. That included individual silvers in the 100 fly and 50 back, with the then-21-year-old setting a new Italian record of 22.62 in the latter event on the men’s 4×50 medley relay.

He took the top seed in prelims this morning, swimming a time of 24.73 for his fastest swim since 2024, and his third-fastest ever. He led the field by more than three tenths of a second, but blew the field away in the final to win by 0.60 seconds. He touched well under the Italian Federation’s European Championship qualifying time of 24.70 with his 24.38 tonight to mark his return to international competition.

He last swam internationally for Italy at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he placed 23rd in the 100 back in 54.22, nearly a second off his best of 53.35 from the Sette Colli a few weeks before. His previous best of 24.40 in the 50 back also came from that meet.

Lamberti’s best time last season was 24.85, swum at the Sette Colli in June 2025, as he missed qualification for the Singapore World Championships.

With his swim tonight, Lamberti now moves into sole possession of the 50 back record in both long course and short course. He moves up to 2oth all-time and breaks a tie with Thomas Ceccon for the 10th-fastest European man in history.
