George McCaskey Isn’t Worried About Complacency Setting in Under Ben Johnson ...Middle East

Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey doesn’t believe complacency will set in under Head Coach Ben Johnson.

I sure hope he is right.

History suggests that complacency has long been one of the franchise’s biggest problems. This has been a team that has been hesitant to make changes or get with the times in more ways than I care to count or remember. But perhaps Ben Johnson is the coach who will keep this team on the right track. At a minimum, Johnson has said the right things, and this team has moved throughout the offseason in a way that complacency won’t be an option for players, coaches, staffers, and anyone else at Halas Hall.

Frankly, I find it encouraging that everyone is taking it head-on, because I’m not sure the powers that be in the past have done so when given the opportunity.

Bears Chairman George McCaskey on Ben Johnson

Two recent quotes from Bears Chairman George McCaskey stood out to me.

The first quote comes from The Athletic’s Dan Wiederer:

“I love Coach’s message. I mean, days after the conclusion of the season, (it was) ‘That’s in the past; we’re moving forward.’ I don’t think we’ll have to worry about any complacency issues on Coach Johnson’s watch.”

And the second is via the Chicago Bears’ official site:

“I think we have a good core of players. They fight like hell for each other. They fight like hell for their coach. I think they’re confident that he will find some way for them to win, and that’s a great and elusive ingredient in our great game. He’s already said that complacency is not going to be an issue. What do we have to be complacent about? We haven’t achieved our goal.”

Even though Bears Chairman George McCaskey isn’t concerned about complacency, it is certainly on my mind as I look ahead to the 2026 season. It would be easy for the Bears to rest on their laurels. Heck, they have done it before after making surprising playoff runs. Naturally, that mindset is part of the reason the team hasn’t had back-to-back playoff seasons since 2005 and 2006.

For what it’s worth, I think the Bears’ actions (to this point) have backed up George McCaskey’s belief that complacency will not be an issue. A defense that finished in the bottom half in scoring and yardage added two high-profile free-agent starters (safety Coby Bryant, linebacker Devin Bush) on defense and useful depth at all three levels (DLs Neville Gallimore, James Lynch, and Kentavius Street, LB Jack Sanborn, DB Cam Lewis) of that side of the ball. On the offensive side, the team brought in a former top-10 pick (Jedrick Wills Jr.) to compete for a starting job.

WHY SAFETY COBY BRYANT WAS A PRIORITY SIGNING FOR THE BEARS

To be clear, the offseason work isn’t done. The NFL Draft is 10 days away. Over that three-day weekend, Chicago’s football team figures to add an influx of talent. Fresh blood on the roster tends to chase away complacency. Even after the dust settles on the NFL Draft, free-agency additions and trades could stil be on the horizon.

Again, the job isn’t finished just yet. And, as George McCaskey points out, there is nothing to be complacent about when you haven’t accomplished your stated goal of winning a Super Bowl. But I trust the guys calling the shots to not fall into the same traps their predecessors did. And that isn’t a feeling I’ve felt before.
