Only three games took place on Sunday in the Cubs’ minor league system as the Iowa Cubs were rained out yet again. South Bend picked up the lone win for the Cubs affiliates to close out their series, while Knoxville and Myrtle Beach both came up short thanks to some tough pitching performances. Let’s recap the action.

Double-A Knoxville Smokies
It was smooth sailing early for Knoxville on Sunday, but things crumbled a bit for them late on the mound, leading to a 7-4 loss. Early on, their series finale with the Trash Pandas was a pitcher’s duel. The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fifth when Devin Ortiz broke the tie with a solo home run. The game remained 1-0 until the top of the eighth, and that’s where things went south on the mound for Knoxville in a hurry.
In the eighth, Nick Dean and Vince Reilly combined to give up three runs, which got Rocket City their first lead of the ballgame. Fortunately, Knoxville’s offense was able to rally. They made it a 3-2 ball game in the bottom of the eighth, then still trailing 3-2 in the ninth, Haydn McGeary ripped an RBI double to tie the game and send things to extra innings.
However, the mound troubles resumed in the 10th for the Smokies. Reilly and Alex Madera combined to give up four runs in the frame, which ultimately put the game out of reach. Knoxville did score one in the 10th on an Ariel Armas sacrifice fly, but that’s as close as they’d get.

High-A South Bend Cubs
South Bend picked up the lone win of the minor league affiliates on Sunday, and they did so in exciting fashion. The Cubs got out to a 3-0 lead in this one thanks to a Leonel Espinoza RBI single in the first, then a Matt Halbach solo homer and Cam Sisernos RBI single in the fourth. Leading 3-0 going into the fifth, South Bend seemed to be cruising. But then the bottom of the fifth happened.
Kenten Egbert came on to relieve Koen Moreno after four innings of scoreless work, and things didn’t go well. Egbert gave the lead away, allowing an RBI single followed by a three-run blast. Just like that, the 3-0 Cubs lead was now a 4-3 deficit.
The game remained 4-3 until the ninth, which is where things got fun again. With one out in the frame. Espinoza came up big again with a double and represented the tying run in scoring position. The next hitter, Owen Ayers, came up with the big knock – a two-run, go-ahead homer giving South Bend the lead 5-4. The Cubs took that lead into the ninth, where Marino Santy shut the door and clinched the win.

While the first two games carried some drama with them, Myrtle Beach’s loss to Columbia really didn’t. The Fireflies got after Riely Hunsaker early with four runs, chasing him before he could escape the first inning. Victor Zarraga followed Hunsaker, and he didn’t fare much better, allowing a four-spot of his own in the fourth. Jackson Brockett and Luis A. Reyes finished off the game out of the bullpen in scoreless fashion, but the damage had already been done.
The Pelicans scored their first run in the fourth on a Cole Mathis solo home run. They didn’t cross the plate again until the top of the ninth. In that frame, Eli Lovich hit a solo home run, and Derek Alcantara had an RBI double, but 8-3 was as close as Myrtle Beach would make this one.
