Following reported overtures from North Carolina and a 37-3 season that culminated with the program’s first national championship since 1989, Michigan has signed its head coach to a contract extension. Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel announced the news during the team’s title parade on Saturday.
“He will be the leader of this basketball team for many years to come,” Manuel said.

After a 27-10 debut season with the Wolverines, May got a 1-year extension from the program that bumped his average annual salary from $3.75 million to $5.1 million.
According to the Detroit Free Press, May earned $4.6 million this season and was set to receive $250,000 raises each year through the end of the deal. The outlet also reported that May received $500,000 in performance bonuses for winning the Big Ten regular-season crown, earning the league’s Coach of the Year honor, making the Final Four, and winning the title.
May, 49, led the program to its winningest season in school history and set a Big Ten record with 19 league wins.
May was an initial target for North Carolina in its coaching search, but he informed Michigan officials prior to the national championship fight with UConn that he was not interested in pursuing other jobs. The Tar Heels eventually hired former NBA head coach Michael Malone.
Michigan, unsurprisingly, is among the early favorites to win next year’s national title.
