SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Democrats are celebrating major victories across the country following Election Day, with several historic firsts and a political shift that some are calling a “blue tsunami.”
For many voters, the results reflect a growing demand for change.
“People have spoken. People want things to be cheaper. People want things to be easier. That’s what it comes down to,” said Max Drucker, who lives in Summerland.
Drucker said he was ecstatic to see Democratic victories in places that have traditionally leaned Republican.
“I mean, seeing the shift in Texas and some of these other places that you thought you would never go blue to. This capacity is just incredibly exciting,” Drucker said.
Other voters said the election results carry significance beyond party politics.
Fysal Safieh, who lives in Santa Barbara, said he was particularly encouraged by the victory of Abdul El-Sayed, the first Muslim senator.
“I think it matters a lot. It’s pretty exciting,” Safieh said. “He still had the support, and he still had all of those people rallying for him in lieu of all this information that was happening.”
Some voters pointed to younger generations and a willingness to consider different political perspectives as contributing factors to the results.
“I think young people, and I think people who were overall willing to take a chance and hear people’s politics and agenda and message — I think that was effective,” said Albert Lemos, who lives in El Rio.
The results could also give Congress a stronger voice in checking President Donald Trump’s agenda, some voters said.
But not everyone expects the political divide to disappear overnight.
Grace Bell, who lives in Camarillo, said she hopes the country can eventually find more common ground.
“Ultimately, I think that we will eventually see a more central opinion,” Bell said. “At some point, I think there’s going to be a lot of opposing people. I think there’s a lot of people excited right now.”
The historic victories are also sparking conversations about representation and who gets a seat at the table.
For Barbara Parmet, a Santa Barbara resident, the results offer hope for changes in how the country treats its most vulnerable communities.
“I do hope we can shift our policies and our treatment of the American people. And treat Palestinians differently. Treat Muslims differently. Treat all of our immigrants differently. Stop ICE,” Parmet said.
Drucker said he hopes the election results translate into meaningful change.
“I think it’s super exciting. It shows that people want change, and it’s great to see it,” he said.
As the country takes stock of the election results, voters in Santa Barbara say they will be watching to see whether the political momentum leads to lasting changes in policies and representation.
