The Chicago Sky have officially bolstered their backcourt.
On Saturday, Chicago announced that it has poached free agent seven-time All-Star point guard Skylar Diggins, 35, from the Seattle Storm. The Sky had been previously linked to Diggins earlier in free agency, ahead of the technical start of signing day.
Chicago, which seems to totally undervalue draft equity, is shipping out the rights to its 2028 first-round selection in exchange for two-way former Washington Mystics guard Jacy Sheldon.
Chris Jones-Imagn ImagesThe Mystics also have control over the Sky’s 2027 first-round pick (via a swap) and a 2027 Chicago second, thanks to the club’s bizarre deal to acquire shooting guard Ariel Atkins. Infamously, Washington also used the Sky’s No. 3 pick — obtained in the Atkins trade — on eventual rookie All-Star Sonia Citron.
Oops.
When it comes to the draft, NCAA stars like JuJu Watkins and Sarah Strong should be on the board in 2027 and ’28, respectively. Abdicating both the club’s possible lottery selections feels somewhat shortsighted, to say the least.
Diggins, Sheldon Represent Massive Backcourt Overhaul
Stephen Brashear-Imagn ImagesClearly, the Sky don’t trust an aging Courtney Vandersloot or 2025 first-round draft pick Hailey Van Lith to help quarterback the club’s offense.
After two seasons with the New York Liberty, Vandersloot re-signed with the Sky last spring for a welcome homecoming.
Unfortunately, one of the best passers in league history tore her ACL just seven games into the season. Van Lith couldn’t bridge the gap as her replacement, and the team ultimately lacked much firepower at the position last year.
The 37-year-old, a former five-time All-Star and All-WNBA Teamer, has won a pair of titles with Chicago and the New York Liberty. She was on a one-year deal, and it remains to be seen what kind of market she’ll face in free agency this year.
Sheldon is a fun energy-shifting piece who’s happy to sacrifice her body for a play, although she doesn’t have star-level upside. Terms of her deal have yet to be divulged.

— espnW (@espnW) July 16, 2025Diggins is the real swing here.
While terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed, sources inform Roberta F. Rodrigues of Forbes that “a generous offer” and the Sky being near her family in South Bend, Indiana, both inspired Diggins’ departure from Seattle.
If Diggins can perform at the All-Star level she displayed last season, then this could make the Sky at least a chippy also-ran. Chicago would need more wing help and some development out of promising third-year center Kamilla Cardoso to truly compete in a league where the retooling Liberty and Las Vegas Aces still figure to rule the roost.
Last year, the six-time All-WNBA honoree appeared in 43 contests for the playoff-bound Storm (23-21), averaging 15.5 points on .423/.365/.788 shooting splits, 6.0 dimes, 2.5 boards, 1.2 swipes and 0.8 blocks.
Other Big Sky Moves Thus Far
Stephen Brashear-Imagn ImagesThe Sky have also, of course, already flipped two-time All-Star power forward Angel Reese and a second-rounder to the Atlanta Dream for a pair of (presumably low) future firsts.
Earlier in free agency, Chicago re-signed incumbent two-time All-Defensive center Elizabeth Williams and brought back former champion role player Azurá Stevens, a frisky center who was most recently a Most Improved Player candidate on the Sparks.
Atkins, too, is rumored to be on the move in exchange for Los Angeles Sparks forward Rickea Jackson, although nothing has been confirmed quite yet.
