Michael Conforto Will Make the Cubs Opening Day Roster ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

From the moment he was signed to a minor league deal, it has felt like the Chicago Cubs really wanted Michael Conforto to make the 26-man Opening Day roster. Some of that is probably just my own projection – he was down in 2025, yes, but this is a guy who was a star when he was younger, and was very good as recently as 2024 – but the Cubs gave him every opportunity to get up to speed this spring.

I tend to think this was going to happen regardless of Seiya Suzuki’s knee injury, but that probably clinched it:

OF Michael Conforto has been informed he will be on the Cubs' Opening Day roster. No official move made by Chicago yet, but he will be added to the roster.

The timing here is likely tied to an opt out that Conforto would’ve had in his minor league deal. The Cubs probably had to tell him today whether he was going to make the team or not, and if not, he could’ve headed elsewhere.

Conforto, 33, hasn’t hit much in his 31 spring plate appearances, but that’s rarely a decisive factor for a veteran position player. If the Cubs feel he is healthy and projects to be a useful bench option (corner outfielder, lefty bat, some DH), then it’s worth carrying him at what I believe is a $2-ish million big league salary.

More coming on this and other looming roster decisions. If Seiya Suzuki opens the season on the IL, the Cubs will be able to carry, in addition to Conforto (and Matt Shaw, Moises Ballesteros, and whichever catcher you regard as the “back-up”), two more players from the Dylan Carlson, Kevin Alcantara, Chas McCormick, Scott Kingery, Owen Miller, Jonathon Long group.

As for Suzuki, just an FYI on the latest:

Counsell said of Seiya Suzuki (right knee) will not be ready for Opening Day, but the Cubs do not need to make an IL decision until Wednesday.IL seems likely, but Cubs will keep monitoring Suzuki's progress in coming days. It's not expected to be a long-term setback in terms of timetable.
