So now it’s time to focus on the Vikings’ game plan. I truly love how matter-of-fact and businesslike Johnson can be. Week 1 was fun, but an NFC North battle against the blitz-happy Vikings on Sunday is the first real stress-test of the schedule, and it’s just days away. The offense has been the center of attention this week, but Johnson was asked about the defense—which allowed 37 points to the Panthers last week—during his Wednesday presser: “I thought certain guys played really well. I’ll say it again, there’s probably some positive regression coming for the Bears defense. Hopefully we see it start trending in the right direction on Sunday against a Vikings team that will be down Jordan Mason and, potentially, Kyler Murray. To that point, Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell isn’t taking the Bears defense lightly, name-checking Jaylon Johnson as “one of the best” in the league, Tyrique Stevenson, Dillon Thieneman, and “No. 21…” (Cam Lewis … let’s hope Lewis makes a play on Sunday that forces O’Connell to learn his name). “I told our receivers today it’s going to be a challenge… You got to have a plan, work your technique, and you got to compete,” O’Connell said of the task of facing Chicago’s secondary this week before Minnesota’s Wednesday practice. On the other side of the coin, the Bears will face a Brian Flores defense that threw the kitchen sink at Jordan Love last week, blitzing him on 78.3 percent of his dropbacks in Week 1, the highest blitz rate any quarterback has seen in a single game since 2023 (via Next Gen Stats). That translated to a 52.8 percent pressure rate and four sacks against Love coming via blitzes. That makes it all the more concerning that Darnell Wright popped up on today’s injury report for the Bears. According to the team’s official report, Wright missed Wednesday’s practice with a knee injury and is listed as questionable for Week 2’s meeting with Minnesota.
