Formula 1 has officially unveiled its 24-race calendar for the 2027 season, headlined by a major expansion of its Sprint format from six to ten events, the return of two beloved European venues, and a surprisingly revised schedule.
The upcoming campaign begins on March 14 with the Bahrain Grand Prix, reclaiming its traditional slot as the season opener in a back-to-back pairing with Saudi Arabia. Melbourne’s Australian Grand Prix will follow as the third round.
Following stops in Japan and China, the championship moves to North America for events in Miami and Montreal. Notably, Canada’s May 23 slot ensures the event will not clash with IndyCar’s iconic Indy 500.
A revamped European leg and historic returns
The European stretch launches on June 6 with the Monaco Grand Prix before heading to Portimão on June 20, marking Portugal’s return to the calendar for the first time since 2021.
The British Grand Prix takes place on July 4 at Silverstone, leading into rounds in Austria, Belgium, and Hungary to close out the first half of the season on August 1.
Following the summer break, racing resumes in Italy on September 5, followed by Madrid. Turkey also makes a long-awaited comeback on October 3, forming part of a demanding triple-header alongside Baku and Singapore.
Another triple-header across the Americas follows with Austin, Mexico, and Brazil, before the Las Vegas Grand Prix takes center stage as a standalone night race on November 20. The championship will then wrap up with a Middle Eastern double-header in Qatar and Abu Dhabi.
Off-track, pre-season testing will revert to a single four-day test at the Bahrain International Circuit from February 24–27. Meanwhile, regarding the conclusion of the current 2026 championship, F1 maintains that Qatar and Abu Dhabi will proceed as scheduled until further notice.
However, preparations are ongoing at Imola to potentially host the 2026 season finale on the Abu Dhabi weekend should ongoing regional conflicts prevent the Middle Eastern rounds from taking place. F2 has already added an extra race to its Baku schedule as a precautionary step to bolster its own season finale.
Ten Sprint weekends and the Monaco risk
Commercial success and fan engagement have pushed F1 management to boost the Sprint schedule to ten rounds. Bahrain, Australia, Japan, and Abu Dhabi will make their Sprint debuts, joining returning Sprint host venues in Canada, Britain, Italy, Brazil, Qatar, and Monaco.
Monaco’s inclusion on the Sprint agenda stands out as the biggest surprise of the 2027 calendar. The tight, unforgiving street circuit offers virtually no room for overtaking, but F1 aims to lean into the Principality's famed qualifying drama by hosting two separate qualifying sessions across Friday and Saturday.
However, adding a competitive Sprint race to Monaco presents a massive gamble for teams.
The razor-thin margins for error mean a single mistake during Saturday morning's Sprint could result in heavy damage, leaving mechanics with just hours to rebuild a car before the crucial main qualifying session later that afternoon.
Explaining the expansion, F1 issued a statement detailing the strong demand behind the decision:
“Due to the continued success and strong demand for the format, the number of Sprint events has increased from six to ten for 2027, delivering even more competitive action across the season for fans, promoters, broadcasters, and partners."
"Since the Sprint was introduced in 2021, the data shows that total viewership of Sprint weekends is 12% higher than non-Sprint weekends, Sprint Qualifying is up to three times more popular with fans than Free Practice, 82% of attendees at Sprint weekends say it adds value to their ticket, and 75% of F1 fans believe Sprint events add greater value to a season’s calendar."
F1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali highlighted the strategic blend of heritage and growth packed into the 2027 schedule:
“The 2027 calendar brings together some of the most iconic circuits and vibrant cities in the world, creating an incredible stage for another unforgettable season of Formula 1.
