Antonelli admits battling fatigue and ‘tension’ ahead of Mexico GP ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Kimi Antonelli has admitted that the mounting pressure of Formula 1's championship battle is beginning to take its toll, with the Mercedes youngster confessing to feeling tired, tense and short of energy ahead of Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix.

The Italian heads into the race facing an unusually demanding combination of physical fatigue and psychological pressure, having struggled to recover fully from an illness that sidelined him earlier in the week.

But with the championship spotlight increasingly fixed on his shoulders, Antonelli also acknowledged that the relentless talk of a potential title triumph has made it harder to maintain his usual composure.

His Saturday qualifying performance offered little relief. After coming within 0.001s of pace-setter Lando Norris in final practice, Antonelli could manage only fourth on the grid, trailing Mercedes team-mate George Russell before Lewis Hamilton snatched pole for Ferrari by a wafer-thin 0.009s margin.

Championship chatter beginning to bite

Antonelli admitted that the constant reminders of his comfortable position in the championship fight, coupled with suggestions that the title battle was already effectively settled, had become an unwelcome distraction.

"I feel very tired - I still haven't recovered completely and it hasn't been an easy weekend, to be fair," Antonelli explained.

"I've definitely been a bit more tense than usual, especially when you keep hearing, wherever you go, any time of the day, the same thing. And people telling me that it's already done, and knowing myself, I've been trying to block as much as possible this noise.

"But it hasn't been easy, and definitely I've been a bit more tense today. I felt decent in Q2, especially on the used tyre, but then on the Q3, on the new tyre, I struggled to put a lap together, just to find the grip.

"But I feel we have a good chance tomorrow, still P4, and we saved a set of new tyres, so hopefully we can use that and move forward."

The 20-year-old has had a particularly uncomfortable few days in Mexico, having missed Thursday's media commitments with a high fever and stomach problems.

Although the worst of his illness appears to have passed, the physical consequences have lingered, leaving him short of sleep and struggling to summon his usual energy.

Antonelli was also candid about the mistakes that compromised his qualifying performance, accepting that his difficulties went beyond simply feeling unwell.

A recovery mission and a good night's sleep

With Hamilton leading the field and Ferrari looking particularly competitive, Antonelli knows that moving forward will require a strong launch when the lights go out.

The long run towards the first corner offers an opportunity, although the congested opening sequence at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez also carries considerable risk.

"It's a long run into Turn 1, so it's going to be important to get off the line well, and hopefully we can gain a couple of places," he added.

"Of course, we'll have to stay out of trouble as well, because Turn 1 is always very tricky, but I think if we get a good start, we have a good chance to move forward. I think the race pace is still not as strong as Ferrari, but I think we can still do well.

"Today, tiredness was a big factor, but as well, I think I didn't really put the lap together. I did a lot of mistakes here and there, so obviously it's disappointing, but I'll try to sleep well tonight.

"I'm aware that I haven't been driving well. I was already going into qualifying and I didn't feel great, and I felt a bit low on energy. It's not an excuse, but for sure, it doesn't mean my finest.

"I'm going to bombard myself with melatonin, so hopefully I will sleep a good 10 hours. I'm just going to try to relax as much as possible. My family has just arrived, so it's going to be good to have them here.

"I'm just going to try to disconnect as much as possible, go to sleep, and then I'm ready for tomorrow."

For Mercedes, Sunday's race carries enormous championship significance. But Antonelli’s immediate priority is considerably more straightforward: get some proper rest, clear his head and rediscover the confidence that has made him such a formidable force this season.
