Great Britain and The Netherlands will join the United States and Australia in abstaining from sending swimmers to the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal as the event continues to lose steam.

Great Britain has announced a roster of 15 athletes to represent the country at the Youth Olympic Games. Those athletes will compete in archery, badminton, boxing, coastal rowing beach sprint, fencing, gymnastics, and sailing, but not in swimming.

Netherlands have announced a six athlete roster that will compete in boxing, breaking, archery, skateboarding, and beach volleyball.

While several countries have announced rosters that include swimming, most of the world’s swimming superpowers have decided to not participate.

New Zealand is the highest-profile nation that will participate in swimming events at the fourth edition of the Games. They will send Ariel Muchirahondo to compete in the 200 back and Alyssa Lawson to compete in the 100 free. Both athletes have requested entries in additional events.

Muchirahondo set New Zealand Records for 17-year-olds in both the 200 IM and 200 backstroke at the New Zealand Swimming Championships in May.

Other nations that have announced swimmers to attend include Ghana, Guam, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, and Zimbabwe. Senegal is also expected to send a roster.

While swimming entry numbers have been lagging, participation appears high in certain other sports, especially archery.

World Aquatics, who are managing the swimming portion of the event, says that they are expecting to have a full entries list by the first week of October.

The Youth Olympic Games were the brainchild and passion project of former IOC president Thomas Bach as part of his mission to make the Olympics more relatable to a younger generation and spread the movement more globally. With Bach’s retirement, enthusiasm for the Olympic Games has waned. The 2022 edition were postponed until 2026.

The swimming portion of the Youth Olympic Games will take place from November 1-6, 2026.
