ROCHESTER, N.Y. — In light of the recent news about plans for a Border Patrol detention center at the federal building in Rochester, a protest outside the federal building took place Monday against those plans.
The protesters are decrying what they call the “cruelty” of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Border Patrol in light of a refugee’s death in Buffalo.
“We are appalled by the senseless, deliberate, indifference that killed our Buffalo neighbor, Nurul Amin Shah Alam,” said a speaker at the protest. “We are appalled by the intentional cruelty that’s been inflicted on by our neighbors by ICE. We stand for justice today.”
Shah Alam was found dead last week after Border Patrol dropped him off at a Tim Horton’s. In a statement, Border Patrol said they offered Shah Alam a courtesy ride.
According to News10NBC’s Buffalo affiliate, Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan said he believes Border Patrol didn’t have a protocol for this type of situation.
The group was also protesting the war in the Middle East.
“We object to another senseless war, and all that war means, both here and abroad,” said a speaker at the protest.
