A roundup of NFL news and rumors as the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis enters the weekend.
Watch Out For the Vikings as a Possible Anthony Richardson Trade Partner
ESPN’s Stephen Holder reports that Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has been given the OK to seek a trade.
Richardson was a first-round pick (4th overall) in the 2023 NFL Draft. Armed with high-grade athleticism and a rocket for an arm, the University of Florida product has oodles of potential. Unfortunately, for him, he has yet to put it together when it matters on the football field. However, things could change for him in the future if he finds a new home.
There is reported to be “mutual interest” between Richardson and the Vikings, which makes sense when you consider this clip exists:

— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) November 7, 2024I’ll never forget going to the Bears-Colts game in 2023 and exchanging thoughts with a Colts fan about the young QBs who were about to square off. The Colts fan was an older gentleman who said he liked Richardson’s talent, athleticism, and upside. But he also added, “I wouldn’t go skeet shooting with him.
Where Richardson lands next will be a major NFL news story. And if it happens to be in Minnesota, it would set up a battle between first-round quarterback prospects who have yet to live up to their potential. I’d be fascinated to see how that would turn out for all parties.
Projected No. 1 Pick Fernando Mendoza is Open to Tom Brady’s Mentorship
Heisman-winning national champion Fernando Mendoza had this to say about the possibility of being mentored by Tom Brady if the Las Vegas Raiders use the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on the Indiana quarterback.
Mandatory Credit: Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn Images“I mean, who hasn’t admired Tom Brady?” Mendoza said, via ESPN. “That opportunity would be fantastic. Tom Brady, I believe, was the greatest quarterback of all time by a wide margin and to be able to have the opportunity to be mentored by him, it would mean so much. And especially to learn, and I’m all about learning. So from day one, I got to learn a lot. It’s going to be a long journey. And to potentially have a mentor like that, it’d be pretty impressive and pretty meaningful.”
The Raiders are expected to use the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft on Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. But I suppose Las Vegas could do something wild and unpredictable. With that being said, I’m sure Brady is excited about the possibility of getting his hands on a premier quarterback prospect as the Raiders try to rebuild under Klint Kubiak, a first-year head coach.
Extra Points and Other NFL News
2026 NFL Draft linebacker prospect put up a near-perfect score at the Combine on Thursday night:Sonny Styles is a LB prospect in the 2026 draft class. He scored an unofficial 9.99 RAS out of a possible 10.00. This ranked 4 out of 3216 LB from 1987 to 2026.Split projected, bench tomorrow. Just good agility drills wasn't enough to hold that 10.00. t.co/aKcBrwdovJ pic.twitter.com/KwIRH3MlcD
— RAS.football (@MathBomb) February 27, 2026 ESPN’s Aaron Schatz tries to play the match game with NFL free agents and teams looking to improve in 2026. Schatz pairs one projected free-agent with a team in what I find to be a fascinating exercise. When it comes to the Bears, Schatz sends safety Kam Curl to Chicago. We have previously discussed Curl as a possible fit for Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen’s scheme. More Bears-adjacent notes! The NFL shared the value of the fifth-year option for players who were drafted in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft. Chicago football fans likely care about this bit of NFL news because it pertains to starting right tackle Darnell Wright. The second-team All-Pro projects to have a $19.072 million tag attached to his fifth-year option. Maybe it is just me, but that seems like a decent baseline number to start extension talks — which Bears GM Ryan Poles says is “definitely a priority.” Franchise and Transition Tag numbers for 2026 are OUT:Here are the franchise and transition tag numbers. t.co/lQmkYAWFEf pic.twitter.com/1W56KCBLKt
— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) February 27, 2026 If the Bears wanted to give safety Kevin Byard III the Franchise Tag treatment, it would cost them $20.149 million. The Transition Tag is a little more affordable, as that number comes in at $16.012 million. I do not expect Chicago’s football team to hand out a tag this offseason. The Cowboys are putting the Franchise Tag on wide receiver George Pickens. If the two sides can’t agree to a long-term deal by July 15, Pickens will play the 2026 season while receiving a fully guaranteed $27.298 million deal. In other NFL news, the Green Bay Packers have hired Cam Achord as the team’s new special teams coordinator. This move comes after the departure of Rich Bisaccia surprised the team by stepping down from his post earlier in February. Achord has 10 years of coaching experience, including a six-year run coaching special teams for the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick. Garrett Podell (CBS Sports) has a rundown of the 2026 NFL quarterback market with a list of the top free agents, possible team fits, and projected deals. I’m so glad the Bears have a quarterback they believe in because I would not want to be dumpster diving for a bridge QB right now.
