University of Northern Colorado searches for new provost, executive vice president ...Saudi Arabia

The University of Northern Colorado has launched a national search for a new provost, the institution’s chief academic officer.

The university’s current provost and executive vice president for academic affairs Kirsten Fleming will step down at the end of June.

The provost’s office provides strategic leadership and oversight for the university’s academic mission. It supports faculty, staff and students by steering academic policies, promoting educational excellence and facilitating innovation across teaching, research and scholarship.

“I’m not necessarily leaving,” Fleming said. “I’m stepping down from the role that I currently hold.”

Fleming, who’s been with UNC since 2022, said discussion is underway about what she may do next.

Fleming said her decision to step down as provost was based on a number of factors.

“I’ve achieved the goals that I had for myself and that were set for me,” she said.

One of those goals was to attain R2 Carnegie classification, which places UNC among the nation’s colleges and universities with high research activity.

Another goal was having the university designated as a Hispanic Serving Institution, an achievement that was accomplished in March 2024.

University of Northern Colorado President Andy Feinstein recently announced he will step down from his role effective Aug. 1.

Fleming said her departure is “completely unrelated.”

“During her tenure, (Fleming) has modeled principled leadership grounded in transparency, accountability and an unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion,” Feinstein wrote in an email to students, faculty and staff about Fleming’s decision to step down. “She has consistently brought people together — faculty, staff and leadership — to advance shared goals, strengthen trust and move the institution forward. The culture of collaboration she helped cultivate will continue to serve UNC well for years to come.”

UNC is now accepting nominations and applications for the provost and executive vice president position, with a posted salary range of $300,000 to $315,000.

“(University of Northern Colorado) is a fabulous place to work. It has really good people,” Fleming said. “There’s lots of progress being made.”
