QB prospect Ty Simpson met with Arizona, ‘would love to be a Cardinal’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson said Friday he met with the Arizona Cardinals at the NFL Draft Combine.

“It was my first interview, and just super great organization,” Simpson told reporters. “(General manager Monti Ossenfort) is a great guy. (Head coach Mike LaFleur) is a super ball guy. (Offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett), all those guys, they love football. They’re a quarterback-driven organization, because they’re very familiar with the quarterback position.

“I would love to be a Cardinal. I think that they’re a great organization. They got a young team and I would be super blessed to play for them.”

The quarterback has also met with the Pittsburgh Steelers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New York Jets. New York holds the No. 2 overall pick in the first round. The Buccaneers and Steelers have Nos. 15 and 21, respectively.

Simpson came into this week as the second-highest rated quarterback in this draft class behind only projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza on ESPN analyst Mel Kiper Jr.’s big board.

Do the pros outweigh the cons in potential Cardinals-Malik Willis pairing?

He would be a reach for the Cardinals at No. 3 overall but could be an option for Arizona in the second round. The Cardinals could also move back up into the late first-round via trade if they felt that strongly on Simpson.

With the Cardinals’ clear quarterback questions and expected split from Kyler Murray, Simpson would give the franchise a young option to learn under veteran Jacoby Brissett.

It just depends on how the Cardinals and other QB-needy teams value the quarterback.

While NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah has Simpson outside the first round in his most recent mock draft, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. and Field Yates have the quarterback landing with the Steelers at No. 21 overall in their respective predictions.

“I think he probably has the most at stake between where we are today and when we get to the draft. He’s someone who I think most teams will have as the second quarterback,” Jeremiah said during his annual conference call ahead of the combine.

“It’s not so much of, is he No. 2? It’s how high of a pick is he worthy of? Is he worthy of a first-round pick? And when you have the limited number of starts that he has, teams are going to have to get comfortable with that.”

Simpson is coming off his first full season as Alabama’s starting quarterback. He completed 64.5% of his passes for 3,567 yards and 28 touchdowns to five interceptions. He added another 93 yards and two scores on 90 carries.

Before his final season with the Crimson Tide, Simpson appeared in just 16 games combined across three years. That lack of starting experience makes up one of the bigger questions surrounding the signal caller.

“I feel like I’m ready and a franchise quarterback,” Simpson said. “Everybody talks about my starts, but I’ve played in other games besides that and I’ve played against really good NFL players. I think about my freshman year and learning from the No. 1 overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner (Bryce Young).

“Going on scout team, I got Will Anderson Jr., Dallas Turner, Henry To’oto’o. I got (Kool-Aid McKinstry) on one side, I got (Terrion Arnold) on the other side. There’s a number of first- and second-round draft picks that I went against and was in the locker room with. The Alabama locker was as close to an NFL locker room as you’re going to get.”
