Starting to get obsessed with extreme vintage cards – the N28 Allen & Ginter series from 1887-88, the famous T206 cards from 1909-11, and some more obscure ones. It’s just really fun to peruse and think about all the history, not only there at the time these pieces of cardboard were printed, but in the intervening years as those pieces of cardboard just sat somewhere.
Carson Kelly went deep for the Cubs as they topped the Padres for the third time in their last four match-ups: Please be awesome at the plate again this year, Carson. The Cubs could PLAUSIBLY have an above-average bat at every single spot in the lineup this year on many, if not most, days. The Kelly-Miguel Amaya combo behind the plate doesn’t even have to be well above-average offensively to have loads of value. But they have that potential. Gavin Hollowell with another three strikeout performance:Gavin Hollowell has struck out all 6 batters he’s faced so far this spring. His fastball is averaging 95.4 mph, and his sweeper is at 16” of HB, up about 5” from 2025.The stuff and command have both looked sharp early. pic.twitter.com/axFfaXRPmV
— Carson Wolf (@TheWrigleyWire) February 24, 2026 I talked about Hollowell after his first appearance, so I won’t rehash it all here. Suffice to say, even as you can’t judge too much in Spring Training, he was already a guy worth keeping an eye on. Turns out, the Cubs have a bajillion of those interesting relievers in camp this year. Speaking of which, yet another reliever with a huge early-spring velocity spike: Ethan Roberts had his fastball up to 95 mph yesterday, and his cutter up to 93.5 mph(!). And his nasty sweeper was getting 20 inches of horizontal movement. We can’t forget that this was a guy, pre-surgery, who made the Opening Day roster because he just looked so potentially dominant. Shota Imanaga had a great appearance for reasons we’ll discuss soon, but I also wanted to share that he is delightfully odd:Shota is the absolute best ?He answered @EliseMenaker’s yes/no questions using a device from his friend in Japan ✅❌ pic.twitter.com/dTrj1ny5E0
— Marquee Sports Network (@WatchMarquee) February 25, 2026 There’s still hope that Jonathon Long can play in the WBC as he recovers from the elbow injury. He took swings yesterday and is trending in the right direction, per Craig Counsell. Alex Bregman wasn’t going to sign somewhere that he didn’t feel he could continue to make the playoffs every year:Alex Bregman on why he chose to sign with the @Cubs:"I think it's a great place that I have a chance to win. I think this ballclub is primed and ready."? 30 Clubs, 30 Camps pic.twitter.com/fjHRNEWQWZ

— MLB (@MLB) February 24, 2026 The teams were playing each other, and the two were briefly teammates, so it doesn’t HAVE TO BE something, but it’s at least a little funny to think about Bregman trolling the Red Sox:Is this a sick joke? pic.twitter.com/YD1VPTLOET
— Tyler Milliken (@tylermilliken_) February 24, 2026 New Cubs outfielder Michael Conforto is in camp:Here’s Michael Conforto taking BP. (You can’t really see him, but I promise that’s what’s happening.) pic.twitter.com/ajBMB7XZlP
— Maddie Lee (@maddie_m_lee) February 24, 2026 This has very much been noticeable overall:You aren't imagining it. Players are as a whole moving through the minors to the big leagues faster than before. It's not just a few notable stars. t.co/V2ApkB5FJG pic.twitter.com/Bw2pxBTD7N
— JJ Cooper (@jjcoop36) February 24, 2026 The article gets into the reasons, of which the ones that stand out the most have to do with the big league game getting younger overall, and the ability for teams to identify/develop/train guys more precisely. Consider that we know that the average male’s physical peak comes somewhere in the 23 to 28 range (with outliers on either side, obviously), so, on average, you’d prefer to have your players up and contributing to your team as many of those years as possible. Nah, this is not true:I swear I haven’t met a single Cubs fan that remembers Carlos Mármol fondly and that makes me sad. pic.twitter.com/LmXsIGvdAg
— MLB Hall of Pretty Good (@hallofgoodpod) February 24, 2026 We remember long stretches of Carlos Marmol being the best reliever on the planet. We also remember stretches where he was maddeningly unusable. But with some distance, it’s mostly just the fond memories (aside from the time I screwed up writing up a rumor about Marmol and the Cubs got maaaaad at me). Dude dominated. From 2007-10, he posted a 2.54 ERA over 308.1 IP, with 441(!!!) strikeouts. That slider was just something else: Are they … are they just eyeballing it:the angels don’t have radar guns set up to measure velocity pic.twitter.com/e1We55nhmY
— A Gentleman (@glenjaminc) February 24, 2026 That must be in reference to some particular part of the Angels’ setup, right? Because how on earth would you not be monitoring the most obvious and simple indicator of, for example, pitcher health in Spring Training? Then again, maybe eyeballing it works better sometimes:LOGAN WEBB IS A PROBLEM pic.twitter.com/DvXJyjvyK0
— Codify (@CodifyBaseball) February 25, 2026 Five straight challenged calls going against the umpire, in a relatively short period of time, is rough stuff:You think YOU'VE had a bad day??Here's 5 Consecutive Calls overturned by ABS challenges. The cheer at the end. ? pic.twitter.com/5EG0WLgm21
— Rob Friedman (@PitchingNinja) February 24, 2026 Crazy, yes, but also worth debating whether this was a swing or not:Wilyer Abreu is so strong he broke this bat at the handle pulling back on a check swing ? pic.twitter.com/JeQcsVdXkf
— NESN (@NESN) February 24, 2026 Baseball is just a game, and also, it is so much more:@SlangsOnSports and @SarahNauser met up at the ballpark today and all I can say is this: Baseball is the best!!What an inspiration these two are ❤️ pic.twitter.com/HFrCJh5d2o
