Carlos Sainz’s next chapter in Formula 1 could be tied to one of the biggest questions hanging over the paddock: what will Max Verstappen do with Red Bull?
That is the intriguing theory floated by former F1 driver and Sky F1 Germany pundit Ralf Schumacher, who believes Sainz’s uncertain situation at Williams could be connected to a potential shake-up at Red Bull.
Sainz has endured a difficult first season with Williams under the new regulations, while reports have suggested uncertainty over his long-term future at the Grove-based outfit. Schumacher now suspects the Spaniard could be keeping his options open in anticipation of a much bigger domino falling elsewhere.
“I’m curious about Sainz,” the former F1 driver told Sky Deutschland. “He seems to have turned down an offer from Williams.
“Does that have anything to do with the fact that Max Verstappen might be leaving Red Bull? Oscar Piastri has lost some of his status. Or is Sainz perhaps heading to Audi?”
The suggestion is particularly intriguing given Verstappen’s increasingly complicated relationship with Red Bull. Although the Dutchman remains contracted through 2028, performance-related clauses are widely believed to provide potential escape routes.
A Red Bull seat waiting in the wings?
Schumacher sees plenty of reasons why Sainz might be reluctant to commit his future to Williams, particularly after the team’s troubled start to the new regulations.
“Things are in turmoil at Williams. The team made a huge mistake with the car,” he added.
“James Vowles also apparently didn’t organise things well enough, now that he and his team were able to build a car from scratch for the first time under the new regulations.
“There’s likely a lot of friction there as well.”
If Verstappen were to activate an exit clause, Sainz could suddenly find himself among the drivers in contention for one of the most coveted seats on the grid.
That possibility becomes even more compelling considering Schumacher’s assessment of the deterioration between Verstappen and Red Bull.
“Something has broken between Verstappen and Red Bull,” Schumacher believes. “The ongoing discussion about his future eventually becomes exhausting for the team as well.
“The team hasn’t delivered either. The car was particularly bad at the start of the season, although the update did help somewhat. But the car is very difficult to drive.”
Verstappen’s doubts could trigger a driver shuffle
For Verstappen, the dilemma is becoming increasingly stark. Red Bull remains the team with which he has spent virtually his entire senior F1 career, but McLaren appears to offer a tantalising alternative if he decides that Red Bull’s rebuilding process is taking too long.
“On the one hand, Max feels comfortable at Red Bull. On the other hand, however, there’s McLaren, where Lando Norris can win with his car,” Schumacher concluded.
“Max undoubtedly assumes that he’d be even better there himself. The question is whether Max has lost confidence that Red Bull can still turn things around, or whether this restructuring is simply taking too long for him.”
That uncertainty could leave Sainz playing a fascinating waiting game. If Verstappen stays, his options may narrow. If the four-time champion walks away, however, the driver market could be blown wide open – and Sainz may already be positioning himself to take advantage.
