Valtteri Bottas opts for extreme cycle commute to Singapore! ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Most F1 drivers handle double-header travel days by slipping into air-conditioned transfer vans, boarding a short flight, and checking into a five-star hotel before their luggage even arrives. Valtteri Bottas, however, is not most drivers.

Following a grueling, wet-weather spin-out at Sepang during a chaotic running of the Grand Prix, the Finnish veteran decided the best way to process a frustrating weekend was to burn through a few thousand calories on two wheels.

Rather than making the quick leap south from Malaysia to Singapore by air, the Cadillac driver hopped onto his Canyon gravel bike to cover the 350-kilometer (217-mile) journey entirely under human power.

Escaping the tarmac on two wheels

The multi-day cross-border trek is taking Bottas through Malaysia’s lush landscapes, trading asphalt for dusty off-road gravel tracks along the way. By day two, the 37-year-old was already racking up serious distance, logging nearly six hours in the saddle to cover an impressive 161.91 kilometers in a single stint.

The journey serves as a dramatic physical contrast to the stifling heat and extreme humidity awaiting him under the floodlights at Marina Bay this weekend.

But for Bottas, pushing his physical boundaries on gravel has evolved into a passion project rather than a chore. Earlier this year during F1’s summer break, his off-road prowess earned him a fifth-place age-group finish at a Czech qualifier, booking him a coveted ticket to the Gravel World Championships.

But sadly, because motorsport calendars wait for no one, the World Championships happen to fall on the exact same weekend as the Singapore Grand Prix, forcing Bottas to forfeit his starting spot.

Never one to mope over scheduling conflicts, he simply brought his own world-class gravel ride straight to Southeast Asia instead.

Finding balance amid a challenging comeback

This tropical trek is only the latest chapter in Bottas’ ongoing love affair with life on two wheels.

From co-founding the annual FNLD GRVL event in his native Finland to making an impromptu detour to a Scottish gravel race when the 2023 Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was canceled, cycling has become his ultimate release valve away from the pressure cooker of the paddock.

That mental reset is particularly welcome given the headwinds Bottas has faced on track. Returning to the grid with the newly formed Cadillac outfit, the Finn’s season has been a test of endurance in its own right.

Sitting 22nd in the drivers' standings, point-less after 16 rounds, and burdened by eight retirements, the contrast between the grueling nature of F1 development and the simple freedom of a long gravel road couldn't be starker.

With mandatory media duties looming on Thursday ahead of F1’s street race, Bottas has a hard deadline to cross the causeway into Singapore.

But regardless of what unfolds next Sunday, he has already proven that when life gives you a tough weekend at the track, sometimes the best solution is to just keep pedaling.
