Sam Short swam to a new US Open and Pan Pac Championships Record, swimming to a 3:40.52 in the 400 free. That broke the previous US Open record of a 3:43.33 set by Rex Maurer in 2025 and the Pan Pac Championship Record of a 3:41.83 from Ian Thorpe in 1999. Short was not even alive when Thorpe set that record as Short was born on September 17, 2003.

In addition to setting new records, Short’s swim was also a lifetime best as he entered the day with a lifetime best 3:40.67 from June’s Australian Swimming Trials. He remains the #5 performer in the event all-time. Thorpe’s lifetime best of a 3:40.08 sits at #3 all-time. Short’s swim tonight marks the 8th fastest performance in history.

Third place finisher Aaron Shackell of the US swam to a 3:43.44. That time moved him up to become the #26 performer all-time.
