We move into the second half of the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships with a little bit of everything here on Day 3 in Irvine, with four events on tap, one of each stroke and across four different distances.
The 400 freestyle leads off with an exciting battle brewing between Summer McIntosh, Katie Ledecky and Lani Pallister come tonight’s final in the women’s race, and we’ll get to see McIntosh and Pallister race side by side in Heat 5 this morning, a rematch of sorts from the 200 free final on the opening night.
The men’s race is headlined by Sam Short, who dominated the 800 free on Day 1, while Americans Rex Maurer, Aaron Shackell and Luke Hobson will battle it out for the two U.S. spots in the ‘A’ final this morning.
World record holder Gretchen Walsh towers over the field in the women’s 100 fly, while teammate Torri Huske will vie to make her first ‘A’ final of the meet and she’ll have a good chance, with only three Americans in the circle-seeded heats—the other being Alex Shackell.
The pressure will be on the American men to step up in the 100 fly, with Shaine Casas, Thomas Heilman and Dare Rose all looking to crack their first ‘A’ final of the meet, while 200 fly champion Luca Urlando could also end up being a factor in that race.
The same can be said about Claire Curzan in the women’s 200 back, seeking her first ‘A’ final appearance after being the third-fastest American (and overall) in the heats of the 50 and 100 back. Regan Smith is the big favorite, while Curzan will have to contend with Phoebe Bacon and Leah Shackley for the other U.S. spot.
In the men’s 200 back, Keaton Jones has looked good all meet and looks like a good bet to lock up one of the U.S. spots in the ‘A’ final, while Jack Aikins should be able to nab the other spot as the top seed overall. Canadian Blake Tierney might be the man to beat come the final after upsetting the Americans in the 100 back.
In the 50 breast, last night’s 100-meter winners McKenzie Siroky and Van Mathias are both arguably better in the shorter distance, so it’s hard to look past them as favorites.
However, in the women’s race, China’s Tang Qianting is the fastest in the world this year at 29.44, the Asian Record holder she set in March, while Siroky (29.64) is the only other swimmer who has been sub-30 in 2025-26.
