Kliment KOLESNIKOV (NAB) – 53.16 Oliver MORGAN (GBR) – 53.91 Georgii SMIRNOV (NAB) – 54.11Hubert Kos opted against swimming the 100 back this morning, a decision that had looked likely ever since he did not scratch the 200 fly yesterday. He had been the #3 seed in the 100 back in 52.20.
Day 6 always looked like a crunch point for the Hungarian swimmer, with semi-finals of the 200 IM and 100 back crossing over with the final of the 200 fly. He qualified fourth-fastest for the latter, clocking a 1:55.13 in the semi-finals last night.
There is a much larger gap between the 200 fly and 200 IM races tonight than there is between the 200 IM and 100 back races. The 200 fly final is the first event of the session, kicking off at 6:30pm local time, with the 200 IM semi-finals starting at 8:02pm. The 100 back semi-finals take place just 15 minutes later at 8:18pm.
Kos cruised through his 200 IM, going out hard with a 54.07 opening 100 before shutting it down on the second half of the race to qualify 8th in 1:58.82. He won bronze at the World Championships last summer in 1:55.34, just 0.16 seconds off Laszlo Cseh‘s Hungarian record of 1:55.18.
Kos dropped nearly a second from his European record in the 200 back in the individual semi-finals, coming within half a second of Aaron Peirsol’s world record of 1:51.92 with a 1:52.30. That is the first sub-1:53 swim since Ryan Lochte‘s 1:52.96 in the 2011 World Championship final, and just the fifth in history.
He went out in 53.64 in that swim, which would have qualified 9th into the semi-finals in the 100 back this morning. It seemed as though he could have given his Hungarian record of 52.20, which he set in the World Championships final last summer to place 4th, a serious scare.
However, with the final of the 200 fly and the semi-finals of the 200 IM also taking place this evening, he would have had a brutal triple if he had opted to take on all three.
With no Leon Marchand in the 200 IM, and a crowded field in the 100 back, it made more sense to go with the former as he chases a second European title this week and his third in a row in the 200 IM.
Kos made a near-reverse of this decision at the NCAA Championships in March, opting for the 200 back over the 200 IM. He won the 200 yard back in a new NCAA record of 1:34.21, over a second faster than anyone else in history, and set a record of 42.61 in the 100 yard back that raised expectations of what he could achieve in long course.
We will have to wait until the World Championships next year for that, which will be a home championship for Kos, hosted at the MVM Dome in Budapest. This is a change from previous years when the Duna Arena, considered one of the finest permanent aquatics venues in the world, was used for the swimming events. It will be in action next summer though, hosting the artistic swimming and diving events.
