FRIDAY MORNING The first session of the meet, Of course I am nervous, the 200 free is today, and anything could happen, I leap into the pool with a, SPLAAAASH but my stroke feels off, 1,2,3,breath 1,2,3,breath Everything feels manual today, but I just blame it on a bad sleep. After warmup it feels as if, I’d swam 100 miles, Knowing I’d done less than, 2. What’s happening today? Was the only thought in my head, but I push it aside, because I’m seeded 1st, in the 200 freestyle. Which meant I was going for, GOLD

BEFORE THE RACE My nerves are through the roof. I talk to my coach, 20 minutes before the race. He gives me some amazing tips, and tells me I’ll do great. Which makes, me feel like an olympian. After the talk there’s, 10 heats until mine, and time starts to slow. Slow like when I pace for distance. Slow like getting out of the pool after a race. But not as slow as I felt in warm up. Once I get behind the blocks, There’s 4 heats left, Until mine. 3 heats left. I put on my cap and goggles, and stretch a little. 2 heats left. I think about my warm up, and I try to refocus, 1 heat left, I move around and slap my legs, arms, and back to warm up. MY heat. I step onto the block and the starter says, Take your marks, then BEEEEP,

THE SWIM Starts with a dive, I fly through the air, and slip into the water. A seamless dive. I surface the water, almost like a shark. I’m already ahead, now I have to keep the lead. I settle into a quick, but loose pace, and keep it into the wall. Now it’s time to turn. I flip and push off. A perfectly executed turn, however during the under water, I need air BAD. I resurface miles ahead. But I’m out of breath. The black line at the bottom of the pool, begins to fade. My muscles stop working. I feel like a sandbag, about to sink. But before I do, I pull myself out of the water, Then out COLD.

AT THE CLINIC The doctor uses a ton, of big words. They all fly right over my head, so I have a few questions. “So what happened doc?” “You blacked out because you have anemia.” “What’s that mean?” “It means you are low on iron.” “That’s it?” “It means you can’t swim this weekend.” “Really?” “Yes unfortunately.” So that’s my scary story, that robbed me of a gold medal. It took a month to get, my iron back to normal. And fortunately I’ve been, healthy ever since. Sometimes the world is random, You’ve just got to bounce back.
