DENVER — Resurrection Christian’s Samuel Stockton and Berthoud’s Donavon Farrell rule the Class 3A heavyweight divisions after sweeping them Saturday night at the state wrestling tournament at Ball Arena.
Stockton captured the 285-pound title for the second year in a row, defeating the 2024 champion in that class in a marquee battle just three matches into the finals.
Farrell, who moved to Colorado from Iowa where he was a two-time state qualifier, won his first Colorado title at 215s as a junior. He’ll have an opportunity to add another next season.
The lights were on Stockton and Mullen’s Champion Dyes, the past two super heavyweight champs in Class 3A. Stockton scored three points in the first period on a takedown and one in the second period on an escape.
Then, in the third period, Dyes almost took Stockton down, but Stockton reversed it into a takedown of his own that turned into a pinfall 42 seconds into the final period.
“I was getting my feet back, able to get a little bit of space,” Stockton said. “I don’t really know what happened. Somehow, I ended up under him. I was able to get enough room where I could get his leg and then build up to my feet where I could turn it.”
Stockton completed an undefeated season for the second year in a row. Last year, he won his first title with a 29-0 record. This season, he finished with record of 35-0. He didn’t lose a match after a triple-overtime loss in the 215s championship match in 2024.
He said last year’s title meant a little more than this one because he came back from that setback in 2024 to win. He also won last year’s 285s title immediately after his teammate and best friend Isaiah Johnson won at 215s.
“Last year meant a little bit more,” he said. “It was proving I could do it. I was so close my freshman year, but didn’t quite get there. So just proving to myself I could after I had my taste.”

After a scoreless first period against Andrew Richins of The Classical Academy, Farrell fell behind 1-0 after Richins scored a point for an escape. Soon after, Farrell was able to score a takedown and then get a fall at the 3:25 mark of the match.
“My whole goal this season was to become a state champ and I did it, I accomplished it,” he said. “From this morning, from the beginning of the season, to even now I’ve been envisioning holding that state title up and bringing (it) back to Berthoud.”
After scoring the pin, Farrell let his emotions show, letting out a yell heard across Ball Arena. He admitted he did have to keep himself composed and enjoy the moment while letting it all soak in.
On the heels of two Iowa state tournament appearances, he not only changed his state, but his mindset too, he said.
“The couple years in Iowa, I wasn’t in the right head space,” he said. “I was afraid of everyone. This time, no matter who they were, no matter if they were a four-time champ or a one-time champ, I was coming out there and I was going to take it from them.”
With a year remaining in high school, Farrell will get a chance next season to win back-to-back tiles just like Stockton did. He is already looking forward to that opportunity next year.
“I have one more year and I’m ready for it,” he said.
