August 10-16, 2026 Paris, France — Olympic Aquatics Centre LCM (50 Meters) Meet Information Meet Central Entries Results Live Results SwimSwam Preview Index Live Stream Recaps: Prelims: Day 1 | Day 2 Finals: Day 1Katie Shanahan sliced half a second off Gemma Spofforth‘s supersuited British record in the women’s 200 back, dominating the final tonight to win her first European title in a time of 2:06.13.
That was 1.32 seconds faster than Shanahan’s previous best of 2:07.45, which she swam to place 4th at the 2023 World Championships. She won silver at the Commonwealth Games last month in a time of 2:08.54, 2.41 seconds slower than her performance tonight.
Spofforth’s record had stood for 17 years since the 2009 World Championships, when she placed 4th. The current European record of 2:04.94 was set in that same race by Russia’s Anastasia Fesikova.
Shanahan was more than a second ahead of record pace at the halfway point, and extended that lead to just under two seconds with 50 to go. She couldn’t match Spofforth’s rapid 31.06 final 50 as she closed in 32.48, but had enough of a buffer to hold on to lower the record by half a second.
