The spectacular team acrobatic final brought the artistic swimming competition at the European Aquatics Championships Paris 2026 to a thrilling close on Tuesday evening, as a packed Olympic Aquatic Centre in Saint-Denis witnessed one final showdown between Europe’s two dominant powers.
After another breathtaking battle, the Neutral Athletes B edged Spain to claim their third gold medal of the championships, while Spain’s consistency across the six days of competition earned them the coveted Championships Trophy.
The team acrobatic podium mirrored those of the team technical and team free events, with the Neutral Athletes B, Spain and Italy once again occupying the three medal positions after an evening of spectacular lifts and electrifying performances that had the crowd on its feet.
The Neutral Athletes B delivered a remarkable performance to “Weird Dolls” to secure the European title with a score of 244.8221.
Silver medallists at the World Championships 2025, they once again showcased the highest Degree of Difficulty (DD) at 26.1370 while producing an almost flawless routine from start to finish.
Their execution was rewarded with six perfect 10.0 scores on the acrobatic elements, while another perfect mark came in Performance, underlining the precision and confidence that carried them to a third team gold in Paris.
Spain pushed the Neutral Athletes all the way, settling for silver with 242.2428 points, just 2.5793 points behind. Swimming to Rosalia’s “Berghain”, the Spaniards once again captivated both judges and spectators with their trademark artistic interpretation and emotional intensity that very few can come close to. Their performance notably earned nine perfect 10.0 scores, including six from the Artistic Impression judges.
The silver medal also marked the final international performance of veteran Paula Ramirez, who brought an end to an illustrious career spanning more than a decade with the Spanish national team.
A two-time Olympian and Olympic bronze medalist in Paris, the Spaniard leaves the sport as a now 10-time European medallist, making for an emotional celebration with her teammates after the routine.
Italy successfully defended its place on the podium by claiming bronze with a score of 219.2545. Reprising
their entertaining “Chicago” routine that earned them the European title a year ago, the Italians once again impressed with their charisma and theatrical flair.
While the gap to the top two teams remained significant, their energetic performance comfortably secured another continental medal.
NAB’s Valeriia Plekhanova commented: “Of course we are very happy. We were once, then yesterday a second time and now a third time with a 100% record. It’s very hard to describe all of our emotions.”
Her team-mate Maiia Doroshko said: “Of course it wasn’t easy, we’ve been preparing for many hours and many months and taking things step-by-step. We see the potential for the future and our goals are very, very high.”
NAB’s Evelina Simonova added: “We still have a lot of work to do with our technique and artistic impression and we will continue to feel excited about this. We think our biggest strength is that we’re united, by our coaches and together with all of the athletes.”
With the conclusion of the artistic swimming programme, Spain also celebrated victory in the European Aquatics Championships Trophy standings.
Awarded to the federation accumulating the highest total score across all artistic swimming events entered during the championships, the trophy reflected the remarkable consistency of the Spanish team, who competed in all 11 events and collected medals in eight of them to finish atop the overall rankings.
Summing up the whole competition, Paula Ramirez said: “I think that this week represents the whole year we’ve been training. Obviously this choreography was our first love since day one that the song was made and so we enjoyed this week as much as the whole year and being able to show it.
“We feel really proud as we did our very best in all of our performances. I think we know what we, or they, need to improve in future years and we’ll go for it.”
Speaking about Ramirez, Txell Ferré commented: “Paula for me is the most spontaneous, crazy, funny team-mate I have had in my life. I think her knowledge has been very important for our team and she has made us push ourselves to our limits during our careers.”
On the same subject, Marina Garcia added: “Everything she does, she does with love and she is loved.”
Italy’s Marta Iacoacci commented: “This our third medal in three days, so we’ve succeeded in our goals and we’ve finished our season in the best way.
“This means so much for us as we tried to construct a future with this team and we hope this competition will help us going forwards. There is a lot of potential in our team and we’re very young from 20 years old to 25, so I think we have big potential.”
Further down the standings, both Portugal and Bulgaria continued to reap the benefits of the European Aquatics Artistic Swimming Support Programme, finishing seventh and eighth respectively after unveiling new choreographies on the continental stage.
