Following a Commonwealth Games that saw Kyle Chalmers surpass fellow Australian superstar Ian Thorpe as the nation’s most successful male at the Commonwealth Games with 12 medals, Chalmers hinted that there is a chance that he may not pursue the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
In a report from Code Sports, Chalmers noted that the 2028 Olympics, while still a big goal for him, is no longer a decision that falls all on him.
“It would be amazing. That would be my ultimate dream, but I know also that my career isn’t all about me anymore, I have to walk away from this meet and have a really good chat with my wife and make sure that this is the best decision for us to keep pushing both together as athletes to get to that point and how we’re going to do it.” Chalmers said in the report from Code Sports. It’s not as easy as it sounds when you’re both athletes. My wife’s Norwegian so we don’t have her family’s support around us. My family is mainly from Port Lincoln so we’ve got my mum and dad in Adelaide, but that’s all we really have to rely on to be able to juggle parenthood, so we have to work out and really plan out how we’re actually going to get to that point.”
Chalmers finished 3rd in his signature event of the 100 free at the Commonwealth Games, behind fellow countryman Flynn Southam, and Matt Richards of Wales. It was the first time that Chalmers had lost the 100 free to a fellow Australian in the Commonwealth Games final in his career. Despite the finish, the medal, and being able to do it in from of his family, including his wife Ingeborg Loynig, a Norwegian swimmer, and their daughter, Astrid, is what Chalmers is most proud of.
“To win a medal for your country, to be able to do that every single time I’ve put the green and gold on is something that I’m super proud of. There’s so many things that I’m so proud of, but I think the thing I’m most proud of is being able to have my daughter and wife in the crowd and share that moment with them.” Chalmers said. “Having a baby is life-changing, especially when your wife is also an athlete and we’re both trying to navigate and juggle training and looking after our daughter and travelling and it’s not easy.”
By the time that the Olympics come around in 2028, Chalmers will be 30-years-old, a point in his life that he feels if he does not reach, he will not be dissapointed.
“That’s the ultimate goal, but you can never be certain. I would love to but it’s never a lock for anyone, right? You’ve got to be able to qualify in June, in 2028, so I’m going to be 30 years old. I would like to get to that point, but I’m also a realist and know that what is important to me now is my wife and daughter.” Chalmers said in the report from Code Sports. “I really feel that I’ve won in life by having them. If I don’t get to the point, I’m not going to be disappointed. I would love to get to that point but it’s going to be very challenging I think for everyone, it’s not a given.”
