Angharad Evans reset the European Championship record in the women’s 100 breast this morning, cruising to a smooth 1:05.45 to lead the heats by half a second. She shaved 0.08 seconds off Yuliya Efimova’s previous mark of 1:05.53 from the 2018 Championships in Glasgow. Efimova was in the field today and placed 12th in 1:07.38, progressing into the semi-finals tonight.

Evans hit the halfway point today in 30.93, but had the fastest second 50 of anyone by more than half a second with a 34.52. She drew alongside Benedetta Pilato and Mona McSharry, swimming on either side of her, and pulled away into the finish.

She was around half a second off the British record of 1:04.96 that she clocked in April, and a tenth of a second slower than the 1:05.34 she swam in the semi-finals at the Commonwealth Games last month. She went on to win gold in a time of 1:06.07 in the final, edging out Aimee Canny for the title.

Evans is the fastest woman in the world so far this season, nearly a second ahead of Benedetta Pilato in second. Pilato was 3rd in the heats this morning with a time of 1:06.20, while McSharry moved up to tie for 7th so far this season.

This was the sixth-fastest swim of Evans’ career, with four of those coming this season.

Taking second in the heats this morning was Ireland’s Olympic bronze medalist Mona McSharry, who was the only other woman to break 1:06. Germany’s 2025 World Champion Anna Elendt was 6th this morning in 1:06.74, a new season best but 1.55 seconds off the 1:05.19 she clocked to win gold in Singapore.

Evans missed the semi-finals at the World Championships last year after clocking a time of 1:07.04 in the heats, but placed 6th at the Olympic Games last time she was in Paris. Benedetta Pilato is the only other woman to break 1:06 on more than one occasion this season, although Evans has now done so six times this season, with two swims under 1:05.
