Despite his name ending up inside the top three finishers at the 2026 Australian Short Course Championships, 15-year-old Andre Labara swam a massive best time in the 400 IM to finish 4th overall, clocking 4:09.82, smashing his lifetime best and notching a new Australian Age Record in the process.
Labara finished less than two tenths outside the podium behind Cameron Ricchini (4:09.66). Coming into that finals swim, Labara held a lifetime best of 4:15.35, a time he blew out of the water.
That time undercuts the now-former Australian Age Record for 15-year-olds of 4:11.75, set by Thomas Hauck in 2018.
Labara opened in 58.28, the 2nd slowest of the final. From there, he steadily worked his way back into the mix, moving from 7th to 4th at the 200 mark and turning in 2:01.38.
He nearly mounted a comeback for a podium spot, coming home in a blistering 56.7, more than two seconds quicker than Ricchini’s 59.03 final 100, but he just ran out of room, having hit the 300 mark just under three seconds back of Ricchini (3:10.63 to 3:13.12).
