The Cubs could turn that around with a win tonight, of course, but if they don’t, it’s season over. It can come so dang quickly in the Wild Card round, and you cannot afford two clunkers to open things up. Here’s hoping Kevin Gausman fares better than Matthew Boyd did. As for Boyd, it’s a bummer that a season can feel like it’s all wrapped up in a single start. Anyone can have a start where they just aren’t quite sharp enough with their changeup. But when it happens in the postseason, the magnification effects are real, especially when you’re facing an aggressive club that is swinging the bat really well. I suspect we’re going to get that check swing replay system at some point in the years ahead to do away with the fretting (and note that, under that 45-degree system, those two wouldn’t even be remotely CLOSE to a swing). The game wasn’t just a stomping on the scoreboard. There was also this feeling like it was a party for the Padres, who got to do everything they wanted.
