ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Protesters rallied downtown Friday in support of national protests to halt ICE funding after two U.S. citizens were killed by ICE agents this month. The protest on State Street ended at 4 p.m. Friday, but the impact continues as some local businesses participate in a national shutdown.
Some local businesses participated in the national shutdown by closing or donating to causes that support immigrants. Go Frost Yourself Bakery is donating a portion of its sales to the Legal Aid Society of Rochester’s Immigration Client Fund.
“I think it’s, you know, my job as a small business owner to not only support the businesses that are closing, but to be a business that if I can’t close, I can stay open and still support a cause that I believe in,” said Mollie Recktenwald, owner of Go Frost Yourself.
Recktenwald said the idea to donate came from her mother, who previously worked at the Legal Aid Society and learned about its immigration department. She also supports other organizations, such as Cure Childhood Cancer and the Wounded Warrior Project, through her business.
News10NBC’s Chris Fortune spoke with over a dozen business owners and people in the area. While none expressed support for ICE, some mentioned they did not want to upset anyone on either side of the issue.
On social media, The Little posted that it will be staying open Friday, and “stand in solidarity with our community, including immigrants both here in our Sanctuary City and across the country.”
