A sign of how bad things are for Trump? Melania is tasked with saving him ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

It seems Donald Trump will do anything to get out of a bad spot. One of the benefits of being the leader of the free world is that you have many opportunities to change what’s on people’s minds. Find yourself in difficulty and there’s always another world leader to kidnap, tariffs to raise or a country to threaten.

The US President already has an inhuman tolerance for the highly uncomfortable. But when things get truly messy, and even his most sycophantic yes-men start fidgeting, his typical response has been to make a lot of noise.

This time feels different. The administration is facing a fierce backlash over immigration enforcement and the human cost of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations. Public outrage has surged after two US citizens were killed by federal agents in Minneapolis, sparking protests and a nationwide debate over federal force.

Prosecutors in the US Attorney’s Office have threatened to quit over the Justice Department’s handling of the investigations. Even Republicans are uneasy: calls for independent investigations are coming from GOP lawmakers uncomfortable with the optics, and pressure on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign is growing.

It seems Trump’s old tricks are failing to keep a lid on the mess. So now, the damage control has a new face: the First Lady, Melania Trump.

Melania’s sudden re-emergence on the public stage, via a glossy documentary about her life, is not a cultural moment but a political one. While this documentary was always due for release this week, the timing is convenient. As stories of brutal deportations and family separations dominate headlines, here is the First Lady, rolled out in full soft-focus, elegant, reserved, conspicuously above the mess of politics.

The film itself is resoundingly apolitical, a manicured curation of Melania as a private individual, devoted mother and fashionista. This is not about her finding a voice, quite the opposite. She is a branding device, a human buffer between the administration and its worst behaviours. Where Trump thrives on conflict, Melania projects calm. Against her husband’s chaos, grievance and cruelty, she offers silence and ambiguity. She doesn’t shout back or argue. Her restraint is a form of compliance.

Melania has always occupied a strange place in Trump’s universe. She is central to the brand but absent from governance. During his first term, she kept her distance, visibly uninterested, perhaps even bored, by traditional First Lady causes.

That distance let supporters and critics alike brand her in all sorts of ways. Is she a secret dissenter, silent hostage, or quietly complicit partner? The documentary trades heavily on that ambiguity. There is also an important gendered edge. Melania’s role relies on the familiar notion that a woman’s presence can redeem a man’s behaviour. It asks the public to view Trump through her, as a husband and family man, rather than through the brutal consequences of his policies.

The logic of this PR operation is absurd. It’s a form of gaslighting so shameless it would draw national disgust in any other country. But this is the United States, where the president has proven there is no low he won’t sink to, no bait-and-switch too blatant. Look at my wonderful wife, my beautiful family, all while my administration tears others apart.

But even this approach is struggling to land. Reporters from major outlets were barred from the premiere, a move that looks less like control and more like panic. And despite the $75m (£55m) spent making the documentary, it is expected to earn just a few million at the box office this weekend, with advance ticket sales barely moving. The empty theatres have already become an online meme. Perhaps, even this is a mess that the First Lady can not clean up.

None of this is to suggest Melania herself engineered this strategy. She may well see the film as a personal chance to redraw the narrative after years of speculation and caricature. But her intention hardly matters. Once a First Lady becomes part of a coordinated media rollout during an acute political crisis, the meaning is explicit.

The documentary may seem trivial, but it could mark a turning point for the president, an individual who once thrived in the centre of every storm, but is now leaning on his wife’s polish and detachment to fix his mess.

It seems the loudest man in the room has finally discovered his limits – and his First Lady has become the quietest and most telling line of defence.
