Murder charges have been filed against a suburban Chicago man after a woman was seen on her surveillance camera being chased into her garage before police found her dead inside her home this week, authorities said.
The Oswego Police Department announced Thursday that 44-year-old Ryan Dodd, of Aurora, was charged with first-degree murder, home invasion, armed violence, residential burglary and aggravated stalking in connection with the killing of 41-year-old Ashley Stewart.
Police said they were first called Tuesday afternoon to Stewart’s home in the 400 block of Valentine Way after her husband called 911 believing “his wife was in danger.” The husband reported he saw on his home surveillance cameras footage of his wife being chased by a man into their garage. He believed the man chasing Stewart was her ex-husband.
When police arrived, they found Stewart unresponsive inside the home. She was later pronounced dead at the scene, with an autopsy determining she died of multiple “sharp force injuries.”
“The investigation determined that Dodd, who was the victim’s ex-husband, followed her as she entered her residence and attacked and killed her with a knife,” police said in a release.
A witness reported seeing a man fleeing the area and a manhunt began, with officers using drones and canine teams to search around Wolfs Crossing Road. A vehicle description and plate number for a possible suspect were also provided, police said.
Minutes later, police spotted a vehicle and driver matching the description of a possible suspect on Harvey Road near Hathaway Lane and the driver was taken into custody a short time later.
Dodd is expected to appear in court for a hearing Friday.
