ROCHESTER, N.Y. — News10NBC’s Consumer Alert focused on the high cost of childbirth, revealing that many mothers face unexpected financial burdens.

News10NBC Deanna Dewberry: What percentage of mothers came out of this experience in debt?

“We found that one in four moms reported that they went into debt due to labor and delivery costs. even when they were insured,” said Melissa Bykofsky, Executive Editor at What to Expect.

Of those insured, 48% had self-purchased insurance through the Affordable Care Act, while 32% had employer-sponsored insurance. The average debt amounted to $2,813.

She added, “41% of women said that the cost exceeded what they anticipated.

This is because the newborn is billed as a separate patient. Requiring families to meet their higher family deductible before insurance kicks in.

Samantha Saxby, Director of Rochester-based Moms with Benefits, shared her experience. “My son was born early, and he was in a special care nursery,” Saxby said. “We hit my out of pocket, but all the care was technically under my son while he was in the special care nursery,” Saxby added. Requiring an additional $6,000 deductible.

The Health Care Cost Institute reported that a trip to the Level One well-baby nursery cost $1,200 per day in 2021.

“Yes. And with an itemized bill, you can see exactly what you were charged so, I’ve heard of moms saying they were charged for an extra night at the hospital, or they were charged for sending their baby to the nursery when they know they didn’t,” Bykofsky added.
