Last summer, after revising how its rewards points (or "stars") are earned, company CEO Brian Niccolhinted that more changes were coming, saying at the time, "the rewards program became too much of a one-size-fits-all," and customers apparently agreed, citing feedback suggesting, "‘If I’m a really big, loyal customer, I think there should be more recognition of that.'"
“We’re redefining the industry with customer-focused benefits that set a new standard and ignite fandom. Starbucks Rewards has always been about creating connection, and we’re evolving the program based on what our members told us matters most, offering faster, more meaningful benefits that make them feel appreciated,” Tressie Lieberman, Starbucks global chief brand officer, shared in a statement. “This evolution is a key milestone in our Back to Starbucks strategy and will reinvigorate what it means to be a Starbucks Rewards member.”
Starbucks' New Tiered Rewards Program to Go Into Effect This Spring
Stars can be redeemed for complimentary customizations (25 stars), a free brewed hot or iced coffee or tea or bakery item (100 stars), a handcrafted drink or hot breakfast (200 stars), a sandwich or protein box or at-home coffee (300 stars), or for select in-store merchandise (400 stars).
But on Thursday, Jan. 29, it announced that it's introducing tiered rewards that give more to those who get more. Instead of earning stars solely for using the app or scanning your rewards card, the new program will "enable members to accelerate their Star-earning as their activity grows," per the press release.
Beginning in March, Starbucks Rewards members will be introduced to three new status levels—Green, Gold, and Reserve—each with exclusive benefits.

Customers who earn 500 to 2,499 stars in one year can take advantage of all the Green tier benefits, plus an extended timeframe to enjoy the complimentary birthday treat (now 7 days), four more double star days per year (earning double the stars on their entire purchase), and an increased exchange of 1.2 stars for every $1 spent. Oh, and stars don't expire.
How Stars Can Be Redeemed Is Also Changing
How customers can redeem their stars will also change, and this is vital information for Green members, as they're currently the only tier that risks losing stars if they don't use them before they expire.
However, the change appears extremely useful and joins the other benefits (without replacing any). New to the program this year, rewards members can redeem 60 stars for up to $2 off any item.
25 stars: Drink customization like an espresso shot, syrup, or cold foam (valued up to $1).60 stars: $2 off any item.100 stars: A brewed hot or iced coffee, tea, bakery item, or packaged snack.200 stars: A handcrafted drink (like a latte or a cold brew) or hot breakfast.300 stars: A sandwich, protein box, or at-home coffee.400 stars: Select Starbucks merchandise. When it does, members can find their tiered level designation in the Starbucks app and in their email, based on the number of Stars they accumulated from January through December 2025. Meaning all existing stars will remain in rewards members' accounts, and there's no rush to spend them just yet, as more benefits are just a few weeks away.
