Days after a Plainfield home with lights many believed were flashing “SOS” went viral, police revealed what is actually behind the mysterious display.
The Will County Sheriff’s office released an update Thursday saying the home on 143rd Street in Plainfield “has been receiving a lot of attention on social media, specifically TikTok” after videos showing the flashing lights went viral on the platform.
“That has led to a heightened concern that something suspicious is happening on that property,” the sheriff’s office said.
Numerous videos have gone viral in recent days after footage showed the boarded up home with a porch light flashing in what the poster said resembled Morse code for SOS: Three short flickers, three long flickers and three short flickers.
“I was driving past a boarded up house, and I noticed both the front and back porch lights were flashing like a signal. Not a power flicker, they were purposefully turning on and off, over and over,” the caption on the video read. “It immediately reminded me of Morse code or a silent distress signal and if someone was trapped inside, that could be their only way to communicate.”
Plainfield police and the Will County Sheriff’s office both responded to the home on multiple occasions and previously told NBC Chicago “there were no indications that anyone was in immediate danger based on the observations or information available to the responding officer(s)” and they “observed nothing suspicious.”
Still, the lack of explanation for what was causing the flashing lights led to increased speculation.
“At the minimum, it is creepy… at the worst, something horrific is happening… and at the very least, we would hope the authorities would investigate and/or communicate what is going on. If nothing is going on, please don’t use an SOS setting for your lights…” one post read.
In their latest update, the Will County Sheriff’s office said “everything is locked or boarded up with no signs of anyone living there.” They also revealed a cause for the lights.
“Upon further investigation, deputies have contacted the property owner, who told us that the lights are solar lights and are flashing due to being defective or low on power. The owner said the lights will be replaced soon,” the sheriff’s office said. “The Will County Sheriff’s Office will continue to, as always, follow up on suspicious activity and neighborhood concerns.”
