The project will contain three districts: a northern high-rise business and cultural area, a hospitality-driven district in the south with resorts, hotels and sports facilities overlooking the adjacent Quisama National Park, and a low-rise research and innovation quarter to the west which will be connected to an existing residential neighbourhood.
The trio will be linked by a 43km-long green loop, which will be connected to public transport services, such as buses, trams and cycle paths.
The green path will also drain rainwater away from the development towards the Kwanza River.
The development’s urban grid will be aligned with the airport’s runways and prevailing wind to increase natural ventilation and reduce temperatures. 3-sq-km of photovoltaic panels will be placed alongside the airport’s runways.
Gerard Evenden, Foster + Partners’ head of studio, said: “The new airport acts as a catalyst for the future city, which will be a thriving new hub for business, education, and hospitality that plugs into Luanda’s incredible landscape.
“Our masterplan is holistically designed to bring business to the capital, create opportunities for local people, and attract new visitors from around the world.”
The project will be built across multiple phases, with the northern business and cultural district scheduled to be finished first.
