First Alert Weather: Yellow Alert Friday for bitter cold and lake effect snow ...Middle East

News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Our cold that we currently have in place is only going to get colder to end the week. A Yellow Alert is in place for Friday for another round of dangerously cold wind chills. Air temperatures Friday morning will be near zero in and around Rochester, and below zero south of Rochester and into the Finger Lakes. This, combined with a brisk wind will drop wind chill values to -10 to -20° for our northern tier counties, and as low as -25° for parts of the Finger Lakes. This is the kind of cold that can become dangerous and harmful to your body if you aren’t prepared for it! You can go outside, just make sure you’re dressed warm, and cover as much of your exposed skin as possible. Hats and gloves will be a necessity. Your furry friend may love to be outside in the snow and cold, but make sure they’re not spending too long outdoors, either. The cold can affect them just like it does us.

In addition to the cold, we’ll see some lake effect snow off of Lake Ontario. Orleans, Monroe and Wayne Counties will likely see at least a few inches of new lake snow from Thursday evening through Saturday morning. The highest amounts will favor Wayne County, but northeast Monroe may see road conditions going downhill as the snow falls.

Before that, Thursday starts to go downhill. We start off dry with even a little bit of sun, but our arctic front will be knocking on our doors. Highs in the teens through midday will drop into the single digits by afternoon and evening, and winds will pick up. As such, wind chills will drop into the double digits below zero. Meanwhile, as the wind shifts out of the northwest, we’ll start to see some lake snow showers developing off of Lake Ontario. There may be an impact on the evening commute, so we’ll be monitoring the roads and the radar through the afternoon and evening.

We’ll be staying cold through the weekend, with some flurries on Saturday, but little additional accumulation. Meanwhile, we’ll be spectators for the next big Nor’easter that will be impacting the bit coastal cities. This storm is expected to stay far enough east that we won’t have any local impacts. But, it’ll likely develop into a large and powerful storm with blizzard conditions from the Mid-Atlantic into New England.
