A man charged at US Democratic congresswoman Ilhan Omar and sprayed her with an unknown substance during a town hall she was hosting in Minneapolis, where tensions over immigration enforcement have frayed.
Video showed a man in a black jacket lunging toward Omar, who was speaking at the lectern, and spraying a stream of liquid at her from a syringe.
Someone in the crowd is heard saying, “Oh my god, he sprayed something on her.” Another commented that the substance “smells terrible”.
The man was pinned down and his arms tied behind his back, before he was removed from the room. Police said he was arrested for third degree assault.
Omar appeared to confront the man after he charged towards her, and then later resumed the talk she was giving.
“I need a napkin,” Omar remarked as the man was taken away, before she said: “We will continue.”
“I learned at a young age that you don’t give into threats,” she later said.
The incident happened just after Omar called for the abolishment of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement and for Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem to resign.
“ICE cannot be reformed, it cannot be rehabilitated, we must abolish ICE for good, and DHS Secretary Kristi Noem must resign or face impeachment,” Omar said as the crowd in the town hall applauded.
The man then charged at her and sprayed the liquid at her before being heard saying: “You must resign”.
Tensions in the city came to a head after federal agents fatally shot intensive care nurse Alex Pretti, and mother of three Renee Good.
Donald Trump has frequently criticised Omar, and stepped up verbal attacks in recent months as he turned his focus on Minneapolis.
During a Cabinet meeting in December, he called her “garbage” and added that “her friends are garbage.”
Hours earlier on Tuesday, the president criticised Omar as he spoke to a crowd in Iowa, saying his administration would only let in immigrants who “can show that they love our country.”
“They have to be proud, not like Ilhan Omar,” he said, drawing loud boos at the mention of her name.
He added: “She comes from a country that’s a disaster. So probably, it’s considered, I think — it’s not even a country.”
Nancy Mace, a Republican representative from South Carolina, denounced the assault on Omar.

“I am deeply disturbed to learn that Rep. Ilhan Omar was attacked at a town hall today” Mace said in a post on X.
“Regardless of how vehemently I disagree with her rhetoric — and I do — no elected official should face physical attacks. This is not who we are.”
