Experts speak on artificial intelligence in Ag as Colorado Farm Show gets underway in Greeley ...Saudi Arabia

Agriculture is often thought of as a lot of hard work, manual labor and elbow grease.

And while it certainly is, a presentation at the first day of the Colorado Farm show Tuesday morning at Island Grove Regional Park focused on something that didn’t require elbow grease, but rather a circuit board.

During the “AI in Agriculture” seminar, ag-tech experts Joni Kindwall-Moore and Jeff Orrey touched on the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to implementing artificial intelligence into ag operations.

Kindwall-Moore is the founder and CEO of The Ryzosphere, which uses AI to connect producers, processors and buyers. Orrey is the founder and chief science officer of GeoVisual Analytics, which provides  farm management software and services based on the specific crops farmers are growing.

Emceed by Colorado Produce Specialist and Colorado State University extension educator Adrian Card, the discussion began with how to identify what ag-tech companies can offer before quickly pivoting to how to use artificial intelligence on a personal and business level, as well as how to avoid AI feeding half-truths or complete lies known as “AI hallucinations” or “AI work slop.”

“You have to treat AI like it’s a kid fresh out of college,” Lindwall-Moore said. “It knows everything, but it doesn’t actually have any wisdom, right? I think we need to teach people to talk back at AI, or it’ll think it’s too smart. And that’s a problem.”

Orrey referenced an AI software, “Claude” that he has began using to write code. He’s noticed that the code it writes is phenomenal, but he ran into issues when he asked it to help design a some criteria for the impact of weather on different crops. At first, it looked good, but when he dug deeper, he realized it wasn’t actually pulling information from credible sources.

“It will cite things, but if you follow the references, you see that it didn’t actually do it’s homework,” Orrey said. “AI doesn’t take responsibility, because it doesn’t have to. So you have to be really careful.”

Lindwall-Moore said she recommends using AI in a couple instances — specifically when it comes to interpreting data.

A lot of data is available to farmers nowadays — it is how they interpret that data and use it to their advantage for which she believes artificial intelligence can play a key role.

“There is so much data that we’re swamped with,” she said. “Next time someone puts a printout of data in your hand, upload it to one of the publicly available modules and say, “Help me make sense of this, this is what I want to know from this data. It’s amazing how it can help provide a guide. Again, it’s not always 100% right, but it can really help you cut through the noise and make sense of big, complex things.”

They then touched on the importance of phrasing when it comes to asking AI questions — though there is no perfect template as each software is different and constantly evolving — before closing with the question that was surely on everyone’s mind: how can people in agriculture use AI to improve their bottom line?

But again, as with most things AI, there is no one-size-fits-all answer.

Orrey referenced a customer GeoVisual Analytics has in California, a production manager who began using their toolset to handle a lot of the paperwork that would cost him eight to 10 hours a week.

“It’s hard to put a number on exactly what he was saving,” Orrey said. “But time is money.”

The farm show continues from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday at Island Grove Regional Park.
