The stretch run of the winter high school sports season is here, with the wrestling and girls swimming state competitions just a few weeks away, and the basketball postseason following just behind them.

Now is when local contenders begin to build momentum for prolonged postseason runs.

Here’s a look at some of the top athletes and moments from the past week within the local prep sports scene:

Athletes of the week

Sophia Carbajal, Northridge girls basketball

Carbajal, a junior, she scored 32 points on 14-of-17 shooting in the Grizzlies’ dominant 63-26 home win against Severance on Jan. 20. She also had 20 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots.

Kyla Lin Hollier, Roosevelt girls basketball

Roosevelt suffered a tough 74-72 loss to Thompson Valley on Friday, coming just short of a second-half comeback. Hollier, a senior, was instrumental in this near-upset. She had a game-high 40 points on 14-of-24 shooting to go with nine rebounds. She tied her season-high in scoring.

Robert Kendall, Windsor boys wrestling

Kendall, a senior, won all four of his matches and topped the podium at 175 pounds during the Northglenn Norse Invitational on Saturday. He picked up a hard-fought 9-3 win against previously undefeated Canon City senior Elias Koonce in the finals.

Maddox Lechman, Windsor boys wrestling

Lechman, a junior, also went 4-0 and won the 132-pound bracket at the Northglenn Norse Invitational on Saturday. He picked up a 21-6 technical fall against Bennett senior Caycen Scholz in the finals.

Riley Pope, Eaton girls swimming

Pope, a sophomore, won two events during a three-team meet between Eaton, Poudre and Estes Park on Jan. 22. She won the 100-yard backstroke (1:11.84) and 200 freestyle (2:22.11).

Taylor Reese, Dayspring Christian girls basketball

Reese, a freshman, stuffed the stat sheet in the Eagles’ 73-53 home win against crosstown rival Union Colony on Jan. 20. She had 16 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go with 10 rebounds, nine assists and four steals.

Savannah Rollins, Roosevelt girls wrestling

Rollins, a sophomore, pinned her way through three matches in the 170-pound bracket in the Les Mattocks Invitational on Saturday at Abraham Lincoln High School in Denver. She defeated Garden City (Kansas) junior Jarica Hutcheson in 1:12 in the finals.

River Sawyer, University boys basketball

Sawyer, a senior, was sharp offensively in the Bulldogs’ 81-53 road win against Fort Morgan on Jan. 20. He had 26 points on 12-of-22 shooting to go with eight rebounds, four steals and four assists.

Maddox Woolverton, Valley boys basketball

Woolverton, a junior had a career night in the Vikings’ wire-to-wire 82-53 home win against Weld Central on Jan. 20. He had 26 points on 9-of-18 shooting to go with five rebounds, four assists, five steals and a block.

Moment of the week

Greeley Central’s girls basketball team just narrowly fended off a furious late-game rally by Longmont on Saturday. The Wildcats needed an overtime period to do so.

Greeley Central defeated the Trojans 58-50 in a nonconference affair. The Wildcats led 24-16 at halftime and 35-24 through three quarters, but Longmont outscored Central 22-11 in the fourth quarter to force overtime.

The Wildcats effectively regrouped in the extra period, going on a 12-4 run to secure the win. Senior Aaniya Davis led Central with 16 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, as the Wildcats improved their record to 7-7.

An even split

Eaton and University reignited their rivalry on the basketball court with each team walking away with a victory this past week. On Thursday in Greeley, the Reds picked up a 60-56 boys basketball win with senior Rowen Meissinger (17 points, 4 steals) leading the way. Eaton trailed 47-30 before outscoring the Bulldogs 30-9 in the fourth quarter.

A day later, University’s defending Class 4A champion girls team evened the score with a 50-45 road win against the Reds. The teams were tied at 34 before the Bulldogs went on a 16-11 run in the fourth quarter. Senior guard Natalie Trujillo led the way, scoring 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting to go with four steals.

By the numbers

Northridge led by 24 points — 29-5 — after just one quarter in its 63-26 girls basketball win over Severance on Jan. 20. The Grizzlies held the Silver Knights to single digits in each quarter. They scored more points in the first quarter than Severance did all game.
