Raito Numata (JPN) – 4:09.82 *JPP Record Yi Zheng (USA) – 4:14.94 Ayumu Negiushi (JPN) – 4:15.44 Andre Labara (AUS) – 4:16.88 Anthony Dornoff (USA) – 4:21.82 Cael Eley (AUS) – 4:23.79 Reagan Cheng (SGP) – 4:25.59 Liam Chew (CAN) – 4:25.84 Pedro Henrique Oliveira Medrado (BRA) – 4:28.91 Colt Chaires (CAN) – 4:30.30Another week, another meet, another 400 standout IMer from Japan. On the second day of the 2026 Jr Pan Pac Championships, 17 year old Raito Numata shaved over 2 seconds off Chase Kalisz’s meet record in the 400 IM to win the title by over 5 seconds. Numata came into the meet with a personal best of 4:10.29, set two months ago at the Japanese Nationals to take second overall behind Asaki Nishikawa. Numata is the reigning world junior champion in this event, as he won the title at 2025 World Juniors in a time of 4:11.37.
With his first sub 4:10 swim, Numata joins the long list of IM specialists from Japan and slots in as one of the youngest; Kosuke Hagino is the fastest 17 year old ever in 4:08.94, Yumeki Kojima went 4:09.38 at 16, and Numata has now gone 4:09.82. The three youngest men to break 4:10 are all Japanese.
At the senior Pan Pacific Championships last week, Tomoyuki Matsushita took gold in a time of 4:06.75, which was also a championship record. His teammate Asaki Nishikawa took 4th behind USA’s Carson Foster and Bobby Finke.

He was over 2 seconds faster than his previous best on that second 100, creating a large enough deficit to drop despite being slower on both the breast and free legs. In comparison to Kalisz, Numata was quicker on every leg besides the breaststroke — one of Kalisz’s infamous strengths. Kalisz went on to become a Gold Medalist at the 2021 Olympic Games in this very event.
