Lombardi was the titled offensive coordinator, but Payton is the one who calls the plays for Bo Nix and the Broncos offense.
That’s what makes this move interesting. Despite the growth offensively, the Broncos have relied a lot on their defense over the course of the last two seasons.
Perhaps the move of firing Lombardi opens the door for Davis Webb, who is currently the quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator, to step into the offensive coordinator role under Payton, unless he takes the Las Vegas Raiders coaching job.
If Webb were to take the Raiders job, the Broncos would see him twice per season, which prompted Payton to joke on Tuesday that “It would be a pain in the ass, for him [Webb],” if he took that job.
Payton also mentioned that the first person he spoke to after the season regarding the Broncos’ run game and the issues they’ve had there was with Zach Strief, who is the offensive line coach and has the assistant head coach title. If Webb takes the Vegas gig, could Strief become the titled coordinator? That’s always a possibility.
One of the biggest questions about all of this, even if Webb becomes the OC in Denver, is whether or not Payton will hand over the reins to whoever has that title or if he’ll continue to call plays himself.
