South African swimmer Janine Lochrenberg was killed in a shark attack off the coast of Orient Beach in KuGompo City on Tuesday, October 20 around 8 a.m..
Lochrenberg was swimming with a local open-water club when witnesses say she was bitten on her thigh and her upper arm while wearing a magnetic shark repellent band on her ankle during the practice.
She was brought to shore by fellow swimmers including her sister Margot, but it is believed that she died before they were able to get her out of the water.
Margot spoke with the BBC and said that her sister “loved the water” and wanted to swim despite being aware of an “elevated shark presence” where she was swimming. “She’d made peace with that. She had a deep affinity with the water and was a remarkable person.”
Lochrenberg’s partner Barbara Briceland said that she was a good swimmer and very brave, saying, “She was a highly intelligent, lots of fun, kind, in a quietish way, thoughtful, well-loved with a love of life.”
Shark attacks are relatively rare, particularly fatal ones. The Florida Museum of Natural History data states that there were 105 “alleged shark-human interactions” during 2025 and their International Shark Attack File (ISAF) was able to confirm 65 of those were unprovoked bites and 29 provoked bites on humans. They report that 9 of those unprovoked attacks were fatal.
In 2025, South Africa had one confirmed shark attack, which was fatal. Since 2012, South Africa has had less than 10 fatal shark attacks.
Orient Beach, where Lochrenberg was swimming, has been closed along with another nearby beach, Eastern Beach, until further notice.
