While fans and football media outlets go nose-to-nose debating whether Drake Maye or Caleb Williams is better, both players spent time during their press conferences lobbing bouquets of compliments at each other.
Don’t get me wrong. I love seeing contemporaries going at each other’s throats in the heat of competition. But I also dig it when two players of like Williams and Maye have mutual respect for each other.
We’ll start with Drake Maye, who sounds like someone who is in as much awe as we are when watching Williams play ball:
Reporter: Do you ever watch him and say I’d like to try that or I’d love to borrow that from his game?
Maye: “Him in the pocket, I don’t know if I could do some of the things he could do. He’s special in the way he can move and kinda escape and evade pressure. [Him] throwing on the run is pretty cool to watch. I don’t know if I’m that shifty in the pocket. He can do some cool things. He’s got crazy arm talent, and it’s fun to watch. I don’t know if I’m that flexible to try some of those things, but I think the way he plays the game is cool. I know he’s doing a great job, and I know he’s got the city on the watch.”
A simple admission of “I wish I could do the things that guy does athletically” is one of the highest compliments one player can give another.

Now, this is what Williams had to say about Maye:
“I’ve kind of grown up with Drake throughout the years. We’ve been in the same class for a while. We’ve been to so many camps. Probably one of the guys that I am closer to in my class and just overall on another team. So being able to watch him kind of grow up and be around each other, it’s been fun. But his mobility and things like that, it’s always been a weapon for him throughout college, high school, and all of that. That’s going to be a good challenge for us and our team.”

In a world where you expect someone to take the low-hanging fruit and run with it, it is refreshing that Drake Maye and Caleb Williams aren’t feeding the monster. Instead, they’re like Lisa and Bart Simpson skating off the ice in after their hockey game ends in a tie to close the “Lisa on Ice” episode.

Yours truly is old enough to remember when Thursday Night Football games were throwaway games featuring gimmicky jerseys and subpar quarterback play. Now, TNF features high-profile games and marquee quarterback matchups. As I said on the latest installment of The Bleacher Nation Bears Podcast, this game is one you circle on the calendar because you want to tune in for the quarterback matchup.
That said, it’s a real shame that this is a quick-turnaround game for both teams because the buildup to a Sunday Night Football or Monday Night Football game between these two would have been epic. Maybe we can get a rematch of this game in the Super Bowl on Valentine’s Day. Hey, a guy can dream … right?
