2026 KOSUKE KITAJIMA CUP

Friday, January 23rd – Sunday, January 25th Tokyo Aquatics Centre LCM (50m) SwimSwam Preview Day 1 Recap/Day 2 Recap Meet Central Results

The final day of 2026 Kosuke Kitajima Cup action unfolded from the Tokyo Aquatics Centre, site of the swimming competition at the 2020 Olympic Games.

World Junior Record holder Shin Ohashi was the top finisher in the men’s 200m breaststroke, taking gold with a solid 2:08.33.

Our 16-year-old Swammy Award winner for 2025 Male World Junior Swimmer of the Year managed to hold off Olympian and former World Record holder Ippei Watanabe, with the veteran touching just .24 later as tonight’s silver medalist.

Yamato Fukazawa rounded out the podium in 2:09.80.

Ohashi’s outing was another impressive performance for the prodigy, following up his monster year, which saw him fire off lifetime bests of 27.01 in the 50m breast, 59.38 in the 100m breast and 2:06.96 in the 200m breast, the latter of which ranks him #1 in the world on the season.

Kokomi Kato, a two-time gold medalist at the 2024 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, was too quick to catch in the women’s edition of the 200m breaststroke.

Following her 20th birthday earlier this month, Kato struck gold in 2:26.10 to handily defeat her competitors by well over one-and-a-half seconds.

Kanagawa University’s Yumi Kobatake reached the wall in 2:27.89 for silver and Yuzuki Kagiya bagged the bronze in 2:30.38.

Kato has been as swift as 2:24.24 in her young career, a time she put up at last year’s Japanese Championships to rank as her nation’s 16th-best performer all-time.

After earning 200m fly silver yesterday, World Championships athlete Genki Terakado upgraded to gold in the 100m sprint.

Tarakado stopped the clock at 51.89 for the narrow victory over teammate Tomonobu Gomi, with Gomi settling for runner-up status just .10 later in 51.99.

Versatile So Ogata repeated as bronze medalist with a mark of 52.06.

Both Terakado and Gomi have been swifter thus far this season, with the former ranking 14th in the world with his 51.59 from November and the latter slotted 9th with his 51.35 from September.

A trio of racers all cleared the minute barrier in the women’s edition of the 100 fly, led by Aioi Nissay’s Hiroko Makino.

26-year-old Makino turned in a time of 58.76 for the victory, with Chiho Mizuguchi and Suzuka Hasegawa reaping the minor medals.

Mizuguchi produced 59.42 and Hasegawa notched 59.64 for the bronze.

18-year-old freestyle maestro Kazushi Imafuku registered a time of 3:48.11 to take gold in the men’s 400m free. This was a follow-up to the grueling 800m/1500m free victories already earned at this competition.

Imafuku nabbed one of two performances under the 3:50 barrier, with Yorito Numata joining him in 3:49.16. Masaki Kiriyama rounded out the podium in 3:53.12. Of note, 400m IM Olympic silver medalist Tomoyuki Matsushita was also among the field, settling for 9th place in 3:57.13.

Imafuku’s best-ever swim in this event remains at the 3:47.77 produced last year, so the teen was less than half a second off that time en route to the gold this evening.

Open water World Championships medalist Ichiika Kajimoto scored the sole meet record on the night as she topped the women’s 400m free podium.

The 21-year-old got to the wall first in 4:09.04, well off her PB of 4:06.81 from last September but enough to get the job done.

Miyu Namba was right behind Kajimoto in 4:09.69 and Ruka Takezawa posted 4:10.89 as the bronze medalist.
