Denver’s first step in ascending on their climb to another winning season and playoff berth begins at base camp on Monday Night Football, and the locker room’s focus is on the day-to-day and one week at a time.
Denver Broncos healthy ahead of Monday Night Football
Coming into this week, the Denver Broncos are as healthy as they can be entering Week 1.
Wide receiver Marvin Mims was present during the media viewing portion of practice for the third practice in a row, where he was listed as a full participant on the Broncos’ first official injury report of the week.
Broncos defense gearing up for Patrick Mahomes’ best shot
For all of us in the media world, the talk about Patrick Mahomes has revolved around wondering what version of him we’ll see in his first game back from a major knee injury. Players aren’t overlooking Mahomes, and that message has been clear since Sean Payton mentioned it last week.

Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph met with the media on Thursday for his first regular-season availability, and with the full focus of game prep this week being on the Chiefs, his message is similar to Payton’s — they believe they’re going to get the guy who has been the NFL’s boogeyman for the last handful of years.
“I think [Chiefs QB] Patrick [Mahomes] is going to be Patrick. In my opinion, he wouldn’t play if he couldn’t be himself. He’s had a good summer and spring to kind of rehab and from what I hear and from what I read, he’s feeling great. So we expect Patrick to be Patrick, and he is obviously the guy in the league who wins an awful lot. He’s obviously motivated, and it’s a big game for them, it’s a big game for us obviously. It’s Week 1 so everyone’s healthy and excited to play, so we’ll get his best shot.”
Broncos offense eager to let it fly
Davis Webb will be calling his first regular-season game on Monday Night as a playcaller. As a former player, he’s got the same competitive spirit he had when he was putting a helmet on, and with that, it’s natural to get butterflies.
“It’s going to happen, and I think that’s a good thing,” Webb said. “I think our staff is prepared, and I think that our players are prepared. We’ll let it rip when it’s go time, but right now there are butterflies for everybody. I think, like, as a player getting hit for the first time or the first completion, getting that first play call in, and we’ll get rolling after that.”
Webb has some previous experience with Steve Spagnuolo, back when Spags was named the interim head coach when he was with the New York Giants in 2017.
“I was like a scout team quarterback, so back in the day, only the defensive players and myself got banana pudding from his wife,” Webb said. “I miss ‘Spags’ (Chiefs Defensive Coordinator Steve Spagnuolo). He’s a great dude, and one of the best defensive coordinators in this game’s history. He’ll be a tough challenge for us out of the gate.”
Spagnuolo’s defense loves to throw different blitz looks at offenses, and occasionally will bring a zero blitz that features slants and loops that get the offense to commit one way, while he brings a safety, nickel, or cornerback on a blitz where the blind spot of the quarterback is.
Webb, if he does face adversity and gets tested as a playcaller against a veteran defensive coordinator like Spags, has Payton to fall back on, which isn’t too common for many young coordinators around the league.
Broncos ready for Monday Night Football
Talking to players in the locker room this week, they’re ready for Monday Night to get here, including Bo Nix, who has been champing at the bit. Offensive tackle Garett Bolles highlighted Nix’s competitive spirit and eagerness to get going.
“Bo’s a playmaker man,” Bolles said. “Big time players make big time plays in big time moments and that’s just who he is. We’ve got a lot of those guys in this locker room, it’s not just him — it’s our receiver core, it’s the O-line up front, it’s our defense that are freaks of nature. Just watching Bo stay calm, obviously he’s a gamer, he’s a baller. I’m glad I get to protect him.”
That eagerness doesn’t just apply to Nix, but the whole team.
The players felt like this year’s training camp has prepared them for the regular season, expressing how tough it was both mentally and physically, getting through the dog days of summer.
With the offense and defense each trading competitive days against one another, the common theme from players I spoke to in the locker room is that they feel good about continuing to build on the foundation they have set for themselves, and their focus is on one day at a time and one week at a time.
There’s a lot of noise from us locally, and certainly some folks on the national media scale, on the hype surrounding this team, but the players appear to understand that they have to climb the mountain for 17 regular season games, and that they’re starting off at base camp in Week 1 and have a long climb ahead of them.
The first step takes place on Monday Night.
