Twin brothers John Sommers and Ethan Sommers have announced their commitments to continue their academic and athletic careers at Grand Canyon University beginning in fall 2027. The brothers are both members of Hillsboro HEAT Swim Team and Westview High School in Portland, Oregon.
John Sommers
“I am so thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career Grand Canyon University! I am so thankful for my family who has supported me throughout my entire swimming career and my Coach James Resare who has made me the athlete and person I am today. I would also like to thank Coach Paul, Coach Harper, and Coach Steve for believing in me and giving me this amazing opportunity. Finally I want to thank Doug Lennox for helping me with everything throughout the entire recruiting process. Go Lopes!!!”
John most recently competed at Futures in Austin where he was highlighted by a 5th place finish in the 100 back with a 57.57. He also made the ‘A’ final of the 50 back, touching 6th in a 26.73, a lifetime best. He also swam lifetime bests in the 100 free (53.50), 200 free (1:56.34), 200 back (2:07.16), and 100 fly (58.38).
John’s Best SCY Times Are:
100 back: 49.18 200 back: 1:48.00 200 IM: 1:51.66Based on his best times, John would already make the ‘B’ final at the conference level in both backstroke events. It took a 1:50.23 to final in the 200 IM.
Ethan Sommers
“I am very excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at Grand Canyon University! I’m incredibly grateful for the support of my family, as well as the Hillsboro HEAT, and especially Coach James, who played a huge role in helping me get to where I am today. I also want to thank Coach Harper, Paul, and Steve for believing in me and giving me this opportunity. Additionally, I’m very thankful for Coach Doug Lennox, who has guided and supported me throughout this process. GO LOPES!!!”
Ethan most recently competed at Futures in Austin as well. There he was highlighted by a 20th place finish in the 200 breast as he swam a lifetime best 2:22.69. He also swam a lifetime best 1:05.21 for 22nd.
Ethan’s Best SCY Times Are:
200 breast: 1:59.72 100 breast: 55.96 200 back: 1:48.01 100 back: 49.51Based on his best times, Ethan would have been 5th in the 200 breast at the conference level this past season while his 100 breast and 200 back would have made the ‘B’ finals. Carter Dooling notably won the conference title in the 200 breast with a 1:54.56 and was the only ‘A’ finalist in the event.
The Grand Canyon men finished 2nd at the 2026 Big West Championships with 728 points, finishing just behind Hawaii who won the conference title with 780 points.
