On Friday, January 9th, the New Trier High School boys’ swim team in Winnetka, Illinois, achieved a major milestone in high school, winning the program’s 1,000th dual meet in team history, after a victory over Maine South High School 125-61.

Prior to the start of the season, Head Coach Josh Runkle came across the information that the program was approaching 1,000 wins by accident, as he saw numbers provided by assistants prior to the start of the season that showed the all-time dual meet win total sitting at 997.

“It was nice, we had some alumni and alumni parents who came to watch,” Runkle said to SwimSwam following the historic win. “I think that made a pretty big impact, as they got to meet some of the guys they see on the record board or have heard about.”

New Trier opened up the meet with a relay win in the 200 medley relay, with the quartet of Reed Woodward (25.62), Filip Stolar (27.06), Teddy O’Donnell (22.90), and Sam Cast (21.59) combining for a meet-opening win in 1:37.17.

The first individual win came in the 200 IM with junior Charlie Sears clocking 2:00.61 to lead the 1-2-3 sweep for New Trier.

New Trier carried the momentum into the 50 free; senior Jared Goldstein and sophomore Reed Woodward led the way with Goldstein clocking 22.21, and Woodward turning in a final time of 22.44. Goldstein also clocked the only sub-50-second 100 free of the meet in 49.22, winning the event by nearly a full second.

On the boards, New Trier’s Knox Noble and Charlie Conniff led the way, finishing 1-2 with scores of 328.65 and 301.05, respectively.

New Trier freshman Sam Cast was dominant in the 500 free, clocking a major 4:51.66, turning in the fastest time of the meet by over six seconds.

The 100 back treated New Trier kindly, with junior Teddy O’Donnell (53.37), senior Luca Burton (5.52), and senior Dylan Day (57.55) finishing 1-2-3, earning major points for New Trier.

In the final individual event on the day, junior Filip Stolar led the way in the 100 breaststroke, touching first for New Trier in 1:02.45, Woodward and Theo Deters finished just behind for New Trier in 1:04.06 and 1:04.68, respectively.

The meet was capped off by Ben Diep (49.06), Charlie Sears (47.20), Dylan Sears (49.57), and O’Donnell (48.66) winning the 400 free relay by nearly two and a half seconds in 3:14.49.

New Trier’s 1,000th dual meet victory comes on the back of over 110 years of history, and was accomplished in home water, in front of a number of alumni who helped get the program to where it is today.
